I received an email this morning from Chai Life Line about a fatal fire last nigh in Flatbush but I don't see anything in the news about it. I don't live in New York. Can someone tell me what happened? It sounds tragic!

I see it online. Mother and 3 children perished. No details yet. Praying it was not menorah related.

Horrific fire in Flatbush/Sheepshead Bay.
Please say Tehillim for Shilat bas Aliza (16) who is critical, Daniel ben Aliza (15) who is critical, Avraham ben Aliza (13) stable, and Yosef ben Ahuva Masuda – the father who is critical.
Mother and 3 children perished.

From YWN:

The 45-year-old father, his teenage son and a 16-year-old cousin were critically injured, officials said; seven others, including five firefighters and two boys, had minor injuries.

Please say Tehillim for Shilat bas Aliza (16) who is critical, Daniel ben Aliza (15) who is critical, Avraham ben Aliza (13) stable, and Yosef ben Ahuva Masuda – the father who is critical.

The family name is Azan.

I saw it on YWN too and was wondering whether the first name to daven for is correct, because its a cousin so likely his mother's name is different.

Either way, they should all have a refuah.

What a tragedy.

I can’t stop thinking about this. This poor family went to sleep imagining that soon they will wake up to a new ordinary day. And in middle of the night everything changed. Four lives gone. Another three badly injured. So so upsetting and sad!

I always think about how much work goes into raising a child, and how it’s all worth it when we know they will grow up and become adults. But here these small children will never have that chance. And the mother is gone too. Poof. In one night.

Why? It feels like such a waste. To create and then destroy.

It makes me so angry.

They're all sons. The youngest one was released along with a cousin according to news reports.

No. There is no waste. There is pain. There are all sorts of feelings people are processing, from the caring strangers such as many of us to those closer. They are legitimate.

But this is how long these neshamos were supposed to be here. Why it happened this way is a question, and if there is something we are all supposed to learn for the future, so be it.

All tragedies are linked to the greater national tragedies going back to the churban. Most recently we had six million plus people die before what we would have assumed was their time. They completed their mission in this world, adding to all the good works we need to bring the geulah shleimah. May it be soon!

This tragedy is heartbreaking!

We are brought up to believe that the point in raising children is that they should get older and give us nachas. However, this is not the point in life at all. We raise our children to connect and have a relationship with Hashem, not to give back to us.
It's hard to understand this, because it is they way of the world. I can't even begin to imagine the pain people are going through. I feel like I have a hole in my heart from this story. It is so hard to hear about these tragedies. We have to try to remember in the back of our minds that there is Master Plan orchestrated by Someone.

So so heartbreaking.

I don't know if this is anything to do with a menora, (seems unlikely at that time of night) but please don't leave menoros unattended. I heard of a fire caused by those disposable filled oil cups. (bh not fatal but lots of damage) Whatever your menora is made of don't leave alone. You can put it out after half an hour.

This is too sad. What a terrible tragedy. Is there anything we can do to help (besides pray...)?
