you can throw it in the crock pot with cut up carrots, onions, potatoes, chicken or beef stock and seasonings.....

Why don't u just saute an onion, with the stew. add spices, then cut up potatoes, and u have beef stew.

my mother always makes the beef with sauteed onions and other spices and potatoes and tomatoe sauce ... it comes out very smooth and she serves it over rice ... yum ... now I want some ...

the world's greatest recipe is from the old better homes & gardens cookbook - which I used to death, and therefore the beef stew page is missing.
it went something like this - brown beef - add onions, garlic, tomato juice (I use 1/2 sauce & 1/2 water), basil, beef soup mix (onion works too, but it's not as good) - simmer for 2 hours or so - add carrots, celery & potatoes - simmer for at least another hour (I usually give it longer, because we like everything really soft).
