I was watching him live as he lied to the crowd that the media was shutting off their cameras so nobody would be able to see his speech.
Like, if what you're saying is true then how am I watching this?

If you turned off ALL media (including breitbart) and only listened to his speeches and read his tweets, I don't see how anyone is ok with this from a president.

Your problem is that you don't figure out why the other side doesn't see what you say. A little more than half the people support you. If you are so right, why isn't everyone jumping on Jeanette's train? The mainstream media is certainly biased against Trump. So why is his supporters still supporting him?
OTOH, I constantly wonder about the defective thinking on the left. Not only was ESPN ridiculous to pull Robert Lee off a broadcast because his name is similar to General Robert E. Lee, but Reuters claimed the Asian dude was named after the General.
Meanwhile in NY, a politician called for the confederate flag to be removed from the NYS Capitol. This idiot didn't check to see the flag was part of a mural depicting the Battle of Gettysburg in the War Room.
I think what is wrong with these folks. I wonder why they are so reactionary, so angry, and so illogical. I think the mass hypnosis that caused folks to burn their neighbors as witches is a good explanation.

I am talking about Trump's speeches and tweets. Pretend you never heard of CNN and Breitbart. You only read the president's tweets and listen to his speeches. What do you think of them? Are you okay with this type of leadership?
Why aren't people jumping on the Jeanette train? Welcome aboard! Comfortable seats for everyone, and I promise not to try and run anyone over. |
I read President Trump speeches. I don't see them the way you do. I mentioned earlier upthread that I had thought he was talking about both sides of the controversy when I first read them.
I think we are in a transition with the presidency and indeed all of life with social media. Many presidents were cruder than Trump; however, they were not held up to the microscope the way Trump is.
Nixon, Kennedy, Bush, Clinton, Truman all cursed and spoke with vulgarities.Johnson consulted with his cabinet while he sat on the toilet with the door open. I am not ok with that type of leadership. Perhaps the position calls for a fighter rather than a saint.
Personally, I am not uncomfortable when DT says things I am thinking. I liked when he called HRC a nasty woman.
Now turn around.
Are you ok with the Asian guy. losing his gig because it was a similar name to a confederate general?
Are you ok with erasing confederate flags in war room murals depicteding the Battle of Gettysburg ?
Is there a line where you say enough is enough to the actions of the alt left?

Yup. What people don't realize when they say things like almost half of Americans support Trump is that actually over 50% of eligible American voters didn't vote.
Trump won with 26% percent of eligible voters in the US. Not that any of this is relevant to Trump's remarks equating a march of white supremacists who murdered someone to those protesting the white supremacists.

You have to feel for the Asians. Unlike many of our ancestors, they didn't have to change their names, due to greater acceptance and/or easy pronunciation, like Lee. Then they go and give their sons a solid American name like Robert, and big trouble. (And G-d forbid they pick a strong middle name, like Edward.)

This last bit is something I am especially grappling with. I am uncomfortable when DT says some things that many people are thinking. Not everything that is thought should be said.
It's one thing to be vulgar in private and another not to have minimal filters. As the people who brought ona'as devarim to the world, we should appreciate this. Of course, this can be taken to an extreme, as we see in the current climate. Take colleges where kids can't be exposed to opposing thought without needing counseling, yet can endorse BDS. It reminds me of something that IIRC Rabbi Tatz said about Mitzrayim. What a nebby god they had. No eagle, lion, bear, but a sheep. Because they stuck up for the meek, the helpless, the underdog in the most knee-jerk way and once our numbers went up, we automatically becae a threat, as mild-mannered as the bnei Avraham were.
With all this though, we do expect more of our leaders. We want strength, yet healing speech. As I said, I'm grappling with this. I think it was wrong of Obama to attack RW talk radio and he sounded quite unpresidential at times. Yet when DT froths about the media, and calls them fake news to their faces, he is being profoundly divisive. If he would have only acted presidential, as he promised in the campaign, the overall perception and legacy he's building would be very different, even among those who would oppose his policies.
I've heard talk show hosts such as Gallagher, or a local host, talk about how they like when Trump says what the masses are thinking, when he's acting normal and like one of the guys with the locker room talk, etc. and it's not something I'd go public on being aligned with. It's not appealing to our better selves and frankly, I would be very scared of an uninhibited American public. I can't help but think of the Mishnah in Avos to pray for the welfare of the government because without it, people would consume each other. Historically, guess who's consumed first.

You are right.
I didn't like Trump intimidating HRC, but I find her nasty. One only had to look at HTC and see "back up you creep" coming through loud and clear in her demeanor. I find her slimy and always did. Fraudsters disgust me.
Regrettably, the candidates that are presidential don't have the chops to win. Presidential is didn't resonate with the voters. Strong and America first did.
I don't think we would venerate many of our past presidents if they were subjected to what DT is.

This is going to hurt, Squish. Not all, but SOME people on the right still support Trump because they are not skeptical enough.
Believing that ESPN is that stupid and not doing the fact checking is an example of not being skeptical enough.
http://www.snopes.com/2017/08/.....espn/
They moved him because there were concerns for his safety because of his name after the Charlottesville march and that he would be heckled or harmed. No one at ESPN confused him with anyone. It was done to protect him from extremists on the right, not to avoid offending lefty snowflakes. So right-wing extremists can be seen as at least partially responsible, not the "alt-left."

I haven't been able to find this story, but let's say it's true. Who cares? Politicians call for stupid **** all the time, on both sides. I can spend three pages of this thread posting about lawmakers who propose bills that show an appalling ignorance in constitutional law, for example. But I usually don't bother because individual morons don't reflect on the whole, at least for me.

But not only that, his approval rating has plummeting since taking office. He now has 35% approval rate, sad!

This is a reasonable attitude, not to paint every white supremacist with a broad brush. But do you adopt the same attitude when it comes to Palestinians? Not all of them ram cars into crowds and kill people? Do you point that out when Jews express disgust with all Palestinians? If you do, that's fine. But I want to know how internally consistent you are.

Affirmative action is not punishing successful groups. It's giving a leg up to traditionally marginalized ones.
I always like to point out that almost 3/4 of universities give admission preferences to children and grandchildren of alumni, called legacy students. Some even give preferences to siblings, nieces/ nephews, etc.
You must agree with me that this practically almost exclusively favors white and now Asian applicants.
Are you upset about this favoritism? How upset are you?
