so we're not supposed to eat meat during the 9 days ... what about the fact that fish is also a luxury - costly, delicious - why are we allowed to enjoy and have hanoah from salmon, etc. or other delectables ...

also what about the person who needs protein and perhaps can only get it from chicken or meat - does it then become permissable ...

Hard to imagine a person who could get protein ONLY from meat or chicken, and not from any of those special nutritional beverages that are like infant formula for adults, but if it were so, then chicken would be preferable since technically it's not "meat" even though we treat it as such. If they literally needed meat to survive (again, very hard to imagine but theoretically possible, I suppose) then of course it would be permissible.

Where is it written that you can't enjoy your food during the nine days? Nowhere have I seen it listed as a mitzvoh that you must eat detestable food during this period. But if you really want to go (you should excuse the expression) whole hog with the suffering, don't have broiled salmon. chunk light tuna is every bit as good a source of protein. (So is beans and rice.)

I actually saw in Rabbi Barclay's book- "Guidlines to the three weeks and nine days" that is is permissible for certain ppl to eat meat during the nine days if they would need it for health reasons. If I'm not mistaken, he even mentioned that pregnant women may eat meat if they feel they "need" to.
Obviously, each person needs to ask his own rabbi.

I def. consider fish like salmon and sea bass to be a luxury item. Costs waaay more than some chicken bottoms, or even cutlets! I paid $13 for 2 slices of salmon fillet today Sad Insane!

I think flounder has to be cheaper than meat. Maybe it's more expensive in Cleveland though.

After the churban, some people wanted to refrain all the time from eating meat, wine, etc. and put all sorts of restrictions upon themselves, until the rabbanim said, "No - this is not the way" and set down clear, specific guidelines. So the rules they made are the rules, and that's it. That doesn't mean you HAVE to eat salmon, and if you feel the churban more by refraining, fine - but make sure not to make it into an extra mitzvah...
