My fam/ neighbors and I get really into Purim Costumes themes etc. I think I maybe get one poem a year?
Why does everyone here seem to be stuck on a poem?

What? You want they should be ostracized from the community?

Seriously, I don't know. Some people seem to like to pressure themselves for no good reason. These things just go in the trash. Nobody really cares.

I can't stand the poems. They make me nauseous. If you can't write poetry. Please don't attempt it.

Monkey see monkey do. One fine Purim years ago, some creative person dreamed up a rhyme to enclose with MM. T His or her neighbors thought that was a fine idea and they followed suit. Next thing you know, it reached critical mass and they'd created a monster.

This isn't a problem in my community because people here value individuality and independent thinking.

It became a minhag. Simple as that!

Shalach Manos without a poem
Feels naked, yes, and bare
Just nosh tossed inside a basket
But they can see that you don't care.

Your truffles may be incredible
Your pie may be key lime
But it all leaves a bitter taste
Because you didn't share a rhyme.

Your costumes match your container
Nosh coordinates perfectly
But it's empty of a poem
And that lack is all they see.

For how much work could it be
To match a line or two?
To show us that Purim wish
Is meaningful and true?

For only words with rhythm
And only lines that rhyme
Became a Purim minhag
To withstand the tests of time.

The only reason they came up
With a name like "hamentash"
Is because it's a perfect rhyme
With "lots and lots of nosh."

That there is no good rhyme for "Purim"?
Since ancient times we cry
We're waiting for Moshiach
So he can tell us why.

The source for this minhag
And many corny Purim puns
Is the lovely rhyming list
Of all of Haman's sons.

So push yourselves, dear friends
Don't let your Manos look undressed
Include a long [boring] poem
To prove that you're the best.

Or feel free to buck the trend
Since this minhag is still new.
As Yidden did for generations, write:
Happy Purim to You!

I don't know, but you would think this is the most important holiday of the year based on the sheer abundance of threads about shalach manot themes and costumes. It's all a bit much if you ask me.

Not everyone makes poems every year. Sometimes they chose to tie in the theme with a nice poem. I don't see anything wrong with it. I get a nice amount of mm and maybe 1-3 have a poem. No one is pressured. They do it because they feel like adding a poem.

I dislike poems because 99% of them are so contrived it hurts my eyes to roll that much. I just don't get the need for desperate attempts to connect a theme to Purim. Hint: dinosaurs and purim? Not connected! Just own it and ditch the poem!

I see requests on here like we're dressing up like Harry potter..how to connect to the Purim story? And people are like well Voldemort was kind of like haman blah blah blah...c'mon people. Sometimes a theme is just a theme.

Well done, purple amother!

Some of us like to write. And we think we're pretty clever.

Please don't burst out bubble.

I dont understand it. purim became such a pressure around people these days. and im kind of falling in. and I didnt want to do a poem at all. im glad my neighbors at not into this at all. just simple. simple. isnt that the best? you look at all the ads and you think, oh so that is what mm should look like. and you want it to look nice. why has simple gone out of style? please bring back the simple and nice.

Usually the rhyme is so forced, I can barely get through the poem. But purple amother, you rock! Nicely done.

Some of like to write
And we think we're pretty clever
Please don't burst our bubble
Or hit us with strips of leather

We cannot write a poem you see
For Yom hakippurim
So give us one chance
With the Shlach Manos
To fill ourselves with glee.

As you can see this is not something I do. But wherever floats your boat.

My thoughts on shalach manos poems in the form of a haiku for the poetry lovers out there:

No, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no,
No, no, no, no, NOPE!

I do it because I ENJOY it. And in my community, many people look forward to our costumes, theme, poem and mm. Never fancy. Just simple foods and a fun poem to tie it all together. Here are some I've posted from previous years. This years will be posted either on purim day or the following week.

I'm with you OP.

If someone enjoys writing poetry then this seems as good a circumstance as any other to compose original verse. But I really don't understand why other people feel like they have to fit their Purim greetings into rhyme or meter.

We tend to write short stories that incorporate our theme and give hints as to why certain items were included in the m"m. We end with Happy Purim from the Xyzs with no pretense that our theme has anything to do with the Purim story. That works for us, but we certainly don't expect anyone who gives us m"m to start writing their own novellas.

I happen to enjoy reading all the poems :-)

Some people just have a knack for it, and those who don't, well, I enjoy seeing the attempt...

Not true that nothing rhymes with Purim
There's "hirhurim" and "siddurim"!

(Yeah, I didn't know either - it means musings LOL )

Poems on Purim are in the light hearted spirit of the day. Obviously, bad poems are bad, but so what? Just groan and move on.

What I don't get is writing a poem for a thank you card or a bar mitzvah speech or other occasions. You're an adult, for goodness sake, so speak in prose like a grown-up.
