It's possible that the heter was given in advance for any action the security detail feels is appropriate. As I understand it, the Secret Service detail is like an obstetrician in the delivery room. If the head of the detail says, "Get in the car," you defer to his judgment regarding what constitutes a threat.
It's also possible that this is being widely circulated to make sure anyone planning violence knows she's not trotting around on foot in a Shabbos robe and slippers. |
I may not get to finish this thread but I must comment.
Do the Ivanka line Shabbos robes come in xl/1x? And are the slippers Barbie height mules or do they have busy mothers in mind? (And if anyone knows about busy young mothers it's Ivanka!)

I think that some people expected this to be her Sandy Koufax moment: sorry, Dad, I turn into a pumpkin at 4:00. No, actually with the expected traffic we'll be leaving at 2:30.
Or something like that.
But even so, I don't think these discussions are likely to be productive.
Here's one of the most constructive things I've seen, from the Forward article for those who haven't read it:
Should observant Jews break Shabbat if it’s not to directly save a life?
For Rabbi Adam Mintz of Kehilat Rayim Ahuvin synagogue in New York City, it’s hard to say.
“If it would be dangerous for [Jared and Ivanka] to walk then that’s reasonable,” Mintz said in a phone interview. “But do they really need to go to the ball? I don’t have enough information.”
Mintz did say, however, that any discussion around the couple’s decision is ultimately a real coup for Orthodoxy.
“It’s amazing that people around the world are talking about whether Ivanka and Jared are violating Shabbat,” he said. “I think it’s good that Orthodoxy is being promoted like this.”
And, he added, we should be glad that Trump and Kushner care.
“It’s good that they felt the need to ask a rabbi the question,” he said. “I hope they continue to ask these questions for the next four years.”
To which I say, amein!

It's in all the secular media, what a chillul Hashem.
"This isn't the first time that Kushner has broken Shabbat ..."
What happened to old-fashioned security guards?

Ivanka's Dirty Little Secret
OK, its actually Jennifer Garner. And the robe isn't nearly as ratty as I hoped.

The Trump family is protected by both the secret service as well as private security that the president elect pays for.

Sixofwands:
And will all the Kushners interrupt DJT's inaugural speech with singing siman tov umazel tov? (That line inspired by this week's Mordechai Schmutter column in Hamodia.)

When something is not prohibited doraita, but rather derabanan or not even that, but a minhag or a chumra, there is a LOT of leeway for rabbis to give heterim for a myriad of reasons. When something is prohibited doraita, only excruciating/lifesaving reasons allow for a heater. So it matters a lot.

This makes absolute sense to me for safety reasons. I guess it is another thing- do they really *need* to go, but...

If you are going to post such a disgusting comment at least have the balls to do it under your screen name. Not that I'm such a fan of Trump, but come on.
To the person who asked why riding a car driven by a non-Jew is different than having someone turn your light off, the reasoning is that each additional person in the car causes the car to use more gas/work harder, so you are actually causing the car to do melacha on Shabbos, even though you are not driving it. WRT Shabbos elevators, some of them have the elevator mechanism set up so that when it goes on Shabbos it automatically uses the maximum strength of the engine, so that additional people in the elevator don't cause the elevator to work harder, because it is already set to the maximum. (I know the Shabbos elevator in my building is like this, but I don't know if all are. IIRC you need to find out how each Shabbos elevator works before using it.)

I'm honestly a live and let live girl but I always wondered this about Ivanka. Did she have a fully orthodox halachik conversion? Also, I wouldn't call her frum... at least not my version of frum. (sorry if this sounds holier than thou, I'm really not, but that's how I see it)

Thank you. I just came on here to post this link.
I agree with every word and, apart from the ridiculously speculative nature of this discussion - since none of us are security/intelligence specialists or rabbis - I think this thread is a travesty.

You've been here over a year but I'll still say welcome.
You can check other threads on the topic and comment there. If they haven't been locked. Or removed. They never go well.
