I am making a surprise birthday cake for my DIL for second day sukkos. My son requested I make a "sukka" cake. I am happy to try to make it, but could someone out there help with the decorating ideas. I am not very creative and am traveling with this cake, so it has to be simple but pretty. I am making a simple chocolate cake as the base, and will decorate it with an icing that can be colored. I appreciate anyone's help here.

Use thin chow mein noodles coated in chocolate, or pretzel sticks and sprinkle with green sugar. Or if you really want to work hard, make leaves out of green fondant.

Little hard candies shaped like fruit, or fruit gummy bears, as garlands
Sukkah walls : pretzels, cigarettes, wafers
Schach : thin pretzels, cut leaves out of green sour belts (just cut triangles then round off a tiny bit)

Trixx, can you suggest how I would lay the sukkah walls? would you suggest I just lay one side in the front and have the top as schach? (Like I said, art is NOT my stong point).

myself, your idea sounds great but more complicated than I can do. Thank you though for the idea

Do it as a cutout 2-D image - don't try to make a 3D
Pick a background frosting color
Then you can make grass at the bottom of the cake - either green frosting or coconut shaken in a container with a drop or two of green food coloring
indent an inch or two from the sides of the cake and make pretzel walls up as high as you choose
acoss the top do schach as others descibed
then put "decorations" below schach
Assuming you have shown no previous amazing cake decorating talents, nobody will hold you to crazy standards. Just make it vaguely recognizable. The effort counts more.

My sister's birthday is on succos and my mom is an expert @ this. Make a flat 9x13, or even in a cookie sheet. cut out a piece of cake for a door and cut out "scach" from green fruit leather for the top. Ice the walls with choc conf glaze and decorate with candies. Most of all- have fun!!

I made this when my boys finished Meseches Succah
Bake up a 8x8 cake. Frost white or other neutral color.
Use plain vanilla wafers for the "boards" Cut some of the wafers in half so it looks like a doorway.
Use green sour sticks for the "leaves" of the schach.
Through the "open doorway" you can put some chocolate lentils in a "chain" so it looks like a succah decoration.
It's really super simple, because the 8x8 cake is already shaped like a succah!

Rice crispy treat loaf pan or 9x13 cake, don't know how big you need it.
Graham crackers stuck on 4 sides minus opening, stuck with marshmallow fluff
Green sour sticks for schach.
In the entrance way you can stick a few trixx hanging as decorations.
Use sour sticks to make chair and tables.
Pipe a little chocolate, with a Baggie a tablecloth for the table.
Pipe on the graham cracker walls (I guess before you put it up)
Happy Birthday ...
I guess you can pipe stick figure family, table, chairs, etc.

I would bake two square or rectangle cakes. Stack them with a layer of icing between. Cover the cake with more icing and then neatly surround the cake (ie. make the "walls") out of the presidor wafer rolls. They should stick to the icing. Then cover the top with something green. I would probably use green chocolate lentils.
