Perhaps looking at this high level instruction might make one feel that running up a simple skirt is easy peasy, by contrast. You could get confidence by looking at this.
Some people might actually want to do it, and don't live near FIT.
Sewing calms people, I hear. It also saves money.
I haven't taken this course.

sewing could save money if done right. But fabric and supplies aren't cheap. buttons and zippers could cost more than a nice skirt on sale in macys in my experience. Still sewing is a great skill to have :-)
I have found my sewing skills to be more useful for mending or making simple alterations to store bought clothes.

Yes. That's true.
There are certain analogies to cooking. A great skill to have. But there are times to buy a food, not make it. There's even a book called "Make the bread, buy the butter". Baking bread is worth it, making butter isn't.
Sewing is useful when you can't find what you want at all, anywhere, at any price, which is often.
Or they do have it, but it's too expensive and making it costs much less. That might apply to simcha dresses and gowns. For an adult, and also for getting a lot of young daughters into matching dresses, if that's needed. They are getting simple shifts off the same bolt of washable taffeta, with matching sashes and hairbows.
You are right about the findings, the buttons and zippers. One can use elastic instead at the waist, or ties you make yourself on the machine, and turn inside out with a knitting needle.
But I hear your point.
There could be sewing gemachs. They would stock bolts of fabric, and zippers, and buttons. Maybe patterns.
Any sewing machine comes with directions. It's like a blender; you fiddle with it on old clothes, so you can mess up at first, and it doesn't matter. That way, you get the hang of it.

Here is a pattern for a wrap skirt, no buttons. One could leave off the pocket and not use the contrast stitching. There are a few other easy skirts at the bottom of the page. I think once you got the hang of it, this pattern could be re-used and easily adapted to other size people.
I haven't made it.
