I'm a sz 20 women's. And want it to hit below the knee. Is 1.5 yds enough or should I buy 2?

What style?
A-line on the bias takes a lot more than a basic straight. 8 panel is easiest to calculate.

Depends on the style of skirt and the width of the fabric, which can be anywhere from 36 to 60 inches. Your pattern envelope should tell you how many yards you need for the width of the fabric. Check the pattern layout for the fabric width you're using; then, based on the length of the pattern, you can adjust if you need more fabric for longer length

Also depends on whether you're using a patterned fabric that needs seame to be matched or a one-way pattern or napped fabric like velveteen or corduroy that must have all pattern pieces running in the same direction. For that you need extra fabric. The pattern envelope will usually tell you how much you need for that if the pattern is suitable for that kind of fabric.

Get two yards. Use any left-over fabric to make something else.
Have a scrap bag. It is no fun not having enough fabric.

Depends on the style but get 2 yards just to be sure.
I go thru this all the time as I am clothing manufacturer.

Puce! Help us out with a source for simple modest wedding gowns?
Or at least patterns?
Sized in the usual sizes?
We could get them mostly cut and done, then, need to go to a tailor for the final fitting and finishing, and the zipper put in.

I am looking at Craftsy website; there are some "novice" patterns there which might be useful.
All you need is a very few simple patterns that work for you.
Puce, you could put a simple wedding gown on that site and we could all go to it and buy your pattern. You would get rich.
