Can't stand when the shirts get too dirty to clean. I though the whole idea of white was respect ... so where do they get it if the shirts are filthy (or tzizis). I say wear once - 2x have to scrub - 3x has to be burned. What are your thoughts?

I wash DS's after each wearing. DH sends his to the cleaners after 1 wearing. They last a long time though. I spray Shout & wash on warm.

DH wears his shirts twice in a row, and then changes it, unless it gets really dirty on day #1.

DH wears white shirt Fri. night and then Shabbat day, unless it gets dirty on Fri. night.
Younger boys, depending on age usually need it washed after one time.

My hubby only wears white shirts for Shabbos, and he easily goes through 3 of them in one Shabbos: one for Fri nite, one for Shabbos morn, and then he changes again for Mincha-Maariv.

When you live in a hot climate, a walk to Shul is plenty reason to change so often! (and even if he didnt, I 'd make him! Twisted Evil

)

Gross eh??? Until the stains do not come out. Try regular hertel on the stains. Presoak and wash with other stuff. Will not harm fabrics(only wool and silk)

I think that the only time that my husband wore a white shirt EVER was for our wedding, and maybe on yom kippur:)

I sometimes wish that black was the colour of frum men (ie their shirts not their outer clothing Very Happy

) Can you imagine if they all wore black shirtsor paisley shirts. Utter bliss. I have k"h 6 sons and all have this thing that their white shirt is a mobile napkin...yuk. they didn't learn it off my husband and I have almost given up setting them straight .
So I have to soak them overnight in diaper soaker (ie Napisan or equivilant in Australia) or in desperation bleach. Also I spend a fortune on heavy duty stain removers to get out grape juice and the cholent. But when I am not lazy and I follow this regime it actually works. They come out crisp and white and if I take them straight out from the drier onto hangers I can forgo the ironing torture.
However if I forget and they get lost in the bottom of the basket the shirts are yuk even after they are washed.
I think we should all petition the rabbanim for a change in shirt colour preference!! Very Happy

why anonymous I like colored shirts - its definately more fun - my son just does it in yeshiva (and he's always in yeshiva). One day in the summer we were getting ready to drive to NY and suddenly he comes out with a black t-shirt and jeans - we didn't recognize him and he looked so much more relaxed.

I like the white for shabbos not for weekdays.

my point is that my husband wears colored shirts for shabbat. he does not like white shirts, but thats ok b/c he can dress very relaxed for work, so he does not have to wear button down shirts then.

and I was anonymous b/c if anyone knows my husband, they will know who I am. also anonymous b/c I thought that I was going to get smashed by women saying that that is not a good thing for my husband to do in terms of chinuch (we have had ppl come over and said this to my husband - mind you we have no children yet)

my dh only wears white shirts. he changes every day. I wash it with tide w/ bleach and spray shout on callor and cuffs. then I send it to the cleaners for starching (I think they re wash it)
the shirts stay very white. after about 3 years they get very washed out (but I think that's long enough)

So yesterday I spent an hour beaching and scrubbing my sons white shirts ... he refuses to listen and only wear them once ... he couldn't believe how clean I got them ... but ... if you wear it once I believe it can be thrown in machine w/o scrubbing and will be just as clean ... the scrubbing only becomes necessary when worn more than 1x ... he said in yeshiva he doesn't have time but come on ... get more shirts then ... I keep telling him this and there were quite a few shirts only 2 were somewhat bad once I was done ...

I would hope they'd wear them once and then wash, the exception being if they wore it only a short while, e.g. to shul Friday night, then they could wear it again Shabbos morning.

When I was a child and we were quite poor, had no wash machine and had to use the laundromat, the rule was colored shirts you wore twice, white shirts you wore once. Who knows, if we had had to wash shirts by hand and boil them on the stove, the rule would have been colored shirts three times, white shirts twice.

In the late 1800's when laundry was actually done by hand on the stove, shirts came with detachable collars and cuffs, and you would buy extra linen (expensive) or "celluloid" (cheap) collars and cuffs. This allowed you to wear the shirt several times to save on laundry expenses, but still look fresh with snowy collar and cuffs. The cuffs and collars, called "bands," were stored in little round boxes called "bandboxes", hence the expression "bandbox-fresh."

There is an old Yiddish joke in which Mottel asks Koppel how often the banker changes his shirt? "The banker? Once a week." "And the poritz?" "The poritz? Once a day." "And the Czar?" "The Czar? Twice a day." "And Rothschild?" "Ah, Rothschild? Toot on oon toot oys, toot on oon toot oys" (Rothschild puts on and takes off, puts on and takes off.)

Dh says not more than 2 for a white shirt and 3 for a colored. Also depends on stains, summer or not...

He wears an undershirt under all his shirts so as long as it doesn't get dirty it could last for more then 1 or 2 wears.

it's not the underarms ... I think most men wear undershirts cause of the tzisis ... but I guess some don't ...

anyway he was so excited they came out clean ... he just couldn't believe it ... I told him he should have remembered that he never had dirty shirts ... and that since he is in yeshiva he should really only wear them once ... he unfortunately cannot do laundry that often ... oh well ... at least I saw him grin from ear to ear he was thinking of throwing them out ...
