A bone age test is sometimes done on children who are experiencing early puberty to figure out if their body age is the same as their chronological age. It is just an x-ray.

my orthodontist does this xray at the begining of treatment. she not only tells me the age of the childs bones, but how tall they will be too. (so far she has been on target too).

There is a correlation between the density of the wrist bone to the gynocological maturity/age of puberty in children.
My daughter had it when she tuned 15 and still hadn't gotten her period (she's going to be 16 in August and still hasn't gotten it).
The xray showed that although she was chronologically 15, her bone density was that of a 13 year old.
