At chico's my favorite store, there is only size 0,1, 2 and 3. I am a size 2! (equal to a 12/14) It feels so good to buy clothes in size 2, the size I used to be once upon a time when I hardly ate and wanted to be skin and bones.....toothpick thin....yes those were the days....but I didn't answer the poll, don't want to mislead anyone!

For those who lament being a 2-digit size or being pear shaped... take a day and go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or similar in your area) and enjoy the gorgeous nude paintings. You can see the love with which the artists painted the women, and you know that all the "Marys" are exemplars of what beauty was to most men, right up until about this century. Those women are warm, white and fleshy, have proportionately larger bottoms then tops, have fresh faces, and are examples of beautiful, real women... as seen and imagined by real men! The lean, hard, top-heavy bodies of modern day beauty is a recent thing. Female beauty has long been defined as "soft", "warm", etc (don't want to get too steamy now...).
Dh was starting to wonder about my fascination with the nudes at the MET till I explained to him that there was no prurient intent, rather just the sheer happiness of internalizing that current standards of female beauty are unrealistic and that for the vast majority of time, I and most of you would be deemed as very attractive!

I am a size 2. I work really hard to be that way. I work out 3 times a week and watch what I eat. Its tough and not for everyone but I feel alot of pressure to be that way. my friends always refer to me as the skinny mini and my dh always mentions how he appreciates that I work hard to stay attractive.
I'm still struggling to lose a few pounds after back to back pregnancies but yes I do feel the societal pressure to be thin

Yes, very sad
When I think that my DH appreciates that I gained over 20 lbs in a year after we got married (I was a 0), and I didn't do it on purpose, I feel very lucky. Hugs to you.

this doesn't have to be sad. if amother is motivated (not forced or miserable) to stay super slim and has dh appreciation for it then kudos to her. its not for most pple but I wish I could be so strong.

You have a point. I'm the second amother who said it's sad. I practically never exercised my whole life, so I think it must be so horrible if you do.

many pple exercise for health reasons or to release stress, and some pple really enjoy it. its not always for weight loss. but Im sure I wouldn't exercise either if I didn't want to lose weight.

It wouldn't be sad if the poster was doing it fully of her own volition and because she enjoys exercise and loves how she looks. But she herself indicates that she "feels societal pressure" that she "struggles" to lose a few (!!) pounds after birth, and that it is external observers (her friends, husband) who she is judging herself by.
Now don't deem me judgmental... I grew up in a city where looking thin is an ideal and externalities are key. My family was one of perfectionists too. So it's no surprise that I came very close to an eating d/o, as did my sister. And I understand the poster's comment "my friends always refer to me as the skinny mini", because everywhere I went people would comment on my size "oh, here come the size 0 xyzs!" (mother is naturally a size 0-2 and both my sister and I were starving and exercising ourselves to that size). B'H I"m beyond that now and living in a place and with a husband to whom being a "skinny mini" is not seen as the ultimate compliment. But I do find that, especially in our frum circles, we give each other compliments so often based on weight and appearance, and I think this exacerbates the external pressure to be unnaturally thin.
We are commanded by Hashem to take care of our bodies, and we as women want to look good. These are both valid reasons to eat right and exercise. But to do so to an extreme amount, to the point where "its tough... and I feel alot of pressure to be that way", for the kudos and approbation of others, or because society touts an unnattainable and unrealistic picture of what the perfect woman should be, then it becomes sad.

lol- my DH would agree with yours!
I wear a very small size but that's because of health issues (gastric) and I can't help it. I would rather be 10-15 lbs heavier and be able to eat regular food
DH would love it if I gained weight!

I dont disagree that society is to blame for this idea of perfection being a size 2 but I also think in some ways its a backlash against the stereotypical "heimishe emma" who is a great balabusta who cooks and feeds a ton of people (and eats herself at every meal), pops out 10 kids, and slowly becomes from a small size, bigger and bigger and bigger. I remember when I was in the dating parsha as were my siblings, many boys wanted women who didnt look like their mom size wise (trying to be delicate here). I even remember a shadchan telling my best friend that its important to look healthy but try not to look chunky

I hear you eschaya, its because im nowhere close to being a size 2 that I say kudos. I would love to have enough motivation (not pressure) to go down a size or two.
I agree that society is making us 'crazy' and not just with weight, also with clothes, styles, fashion, kinda home and car you have, everyone is trying to impress everyone and this affects many pple. that the current world we live in.

I think people have raised some interesting ideas about weight and appearance and societal pressure, etc. But - how on earth are we still (on page 8) talking about clothing size as if it existed independently of height?
It's just so strange to me to see people talking about "the ideal of a size 2" - well yeah, if you're 5'3" maybe. If you're 5'8", people will be going on about how skinny you are if you drop below a size 8.
