DD just got custom orthotic inserts for her shoes. We went to a shoe store today to buy shoes and were told she needs either lace ups or straps. DD was very disappointed. She wants loafers and only loafers.
Is it true what I was told? Can anyone tell me what brands/style of shoes they purchase for use for orthotics?
Thanks.

loafer are not great for orthotics. I tried it for ds and it wasn't a great fit.
Officially, it can fit with an shoe deep enough (after taking off the inside) but most loafers aren't made that way.
Lace ups are very in now for girls. How old is she?

I never had any luck with orthotics and loafers. My foot kept coming out of the shoe. For the short time I wore them I wore sneakers.

I stopped wearing them due to difficulty in finding shoes. I should still be wearing them.

I know that lace ups are in now. DD doesn't like them though. She doesn't want to tie shoes. She is 9.
She says lace ups are better than straps and she will wear them if she has no other choice. Thank G-d! So I guess I really wanted to know if loafers are indeed out and secondly, brands of shoes that have a removeable inserts irregardless of style.
sneakers are not an option in her school. not allowed.

Most shoes have an insert (it's usually glued in but the salesperson can often remove it to try with the orthotic).

Try venettini shoes. These are the only shoes that I can wear with my orthotics and they work great.

my daughter is 2. I tried orthotics with the venettini loafers and the elastic strap, it did not fit. the shoes are not high enough for the orthotic and the foot. I only get her laces, it is annoying especially for a 9 year old but at least they are in so theres a selection. my shoe store and dr both told me they are the most supportive for orthotics too.

Wow! Thanks. those hush puppies look good. But they don't have her size. But at least I now know what to search for. Very helpful, thanks!

I got these for my dd for school. I ripped out the insoles and replaced them with the orthotics. she has 3/4 orthotics, so I cut the original insole and put the front part of it back in the shoe with the orthotics. the shoe does get a bit wider with the orthotics, but my dd loves them and is happy to wear them. she's been begging for "leather shoes" (she doesn't know they're called loafers) and is happy to wear what everyone else is wearing. they were on serious sale a while back. look around for better prices.
