I don't know ... I can never think of anything. Drives my poor DH crazy!
Maybe a cleaning lady?

Recipe Books.
They are so expensive ($40 and up) and I can never justify buying them.

I hate "things" that just sit around. I like gift certificates so I can choose what I want. Or, the best...My MIL gave me a voucher for a facial/massage for my birthday! It was the best present I ever got!

Hands down, cookbooks! They are about $25 or so and are great to have!

Sounds good to me
Raisin, I was sure you would put books! That is unless you've changed in the past ten years

No I haven't changed that much. But I like to choose my books myself - there is a lot of rubbish out there. (eg all those frum cia mafia shin bet Rome Sao Paulo London type novels ) A book voucher would not go amiss!
And just one book???? I'm with Only1. 6 AT LEAST!
Don't laugh, but I am now running a bookshop, among everything else. (Me the businesswomen! Yay!)
Oh, I like cookbooks too!

That's much more than 40$. I was thinking the same thing, but then realized the the question was for under 40$. I'm still thinking what I would want for that price. I think it's not the thing that is bought, it's the thought that counts. you know, if someone is spending 100$ or more then I would imagine the person buying would want it to be just what you would want to recieve. but when it's 40$, I think it's more the thought and gesture... (don't get me wrong, $40 is money.. I can use it to cover part of my phone bill)

Easy.
A subscription for "Cooking Light" (actually got this for my brthday last year from DH, asked for it..). "Better Homes and Gardens", "national geographic" are also good magazines.
A cool kitchen gadget - a nice functional apron for example, a bread knife, a nice pajama set, a recipe book (that's a good one!), a dinner out... a pair of luxurious slippers (sierra trading post has real shearling slippers for $40!)

A husband who expresses his love and appreciation for me - it doesn't cost a penny but I still haven't got one.
