My 2.5 year old DS recently came home from a friend's house having learned that the word "stupid" is used to show you're angry at someone.
He never calls someone or something "stupid", he just yells the word when he's feeling frustrated, and I've been working on teaching him that it's not a nice word by reacting sternly every time he says it.
But he's starting to get clever. We just had this conversation:
Me: Yiddy, if you paint yogurt on the table instead of eating it, I will take it away from you.
DS: (fingerpaints with yogurt on the table)
Me: You must not be hungry. (takes yogurt away) If you want to eat like a polite little boy, I'll give it back to you.
DS: (frustrated) STUPID! STUPID!
Me: (serious face) Yedidya, we don't say words like that. That's a not-nice word.
DS: (muttering under his breath angrily, not quite intelligible) stoop...
Me: (VERY serious warning face) Yedidya...
DS: (looking up at me sulkily and shrugging) Soop.
Me: (not sure what my reaction should be; is he testing me?)
DS: Soup. I LIKE SOUP. (goes back to moping like a teenager)
So he got outta that one.
