I received a nice camera, and I have no idea how to use it! I am used to the small point and click (is that what they're called), and don't know about lights, shadows, flash, focusing... anything.

I don't even know how to refer to it- I looked at the camera and came up with this:
Nikon DX AF S Nikkor 18 55mm

Does that tell you anything?

Can you help me?

Wow, that's a nice gift! Smile

You received a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex, but that doesn't matter) camera, which is basically a camera that you can control which lenses attach and which flashes to use, which can change the outcome of a picture drastically. (As opposed to a point & shoot which has everything built in). It has many different variables and options that regular digital cameras don't have, which can be overwhelming but also cool.

I'd recommend trust ole' Google to find some online basics tutorials. Heres this: http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Eve.....l-SLR which seems to have a lot of information, and I've head Digital Photography School is good too. Look here: http://digital-photography-sch.....-here

It takes a lot of practice (I'm still learning my not-quite-a-DSLR camera) but you can get really amazing results and photography is just all kinds of awesome. If you have a friend who is a photographer, ask her to teach you the basics because I find that learning in person is way easier than trying to figure out everything yourself and you'll know instantly whether you are doing things correctly or not.

If you're truly serious about photography, I think The Bold Edge offers a photography class, which if you have time, might be a great next step. (Or first step, even!)

Good luck!

im very into photography, it's my obsessive hobby!

you only have one lens, but with a dslr, you have the option of swapping lenses. If you want to know the basic functions of using your camera, I would really really recommend reading your manual! yes, boring butit has a lot of great information. You'll learn the ideas of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc.

if you plan on using your camera on Auto....please dont! you can use point and shoot instead!

So if I would want another lens, I would buy it, right?

The problem is that the box is lost- I think it got thrown out. Sad So that would include any other supplies (why I am curious about the lens being included/not) and the manual!
