recenly I heard a man donated his liver

to the fisrt peson on the waiting l ist .

sadly he was brain dead and died within a week of having a accident

it is consoling that he has saved another life .it is amazing that at a time like this - that the family could even think of doing this .

So how come then a person can donate one of their kidneys to a person while they are still alive but cannot donate when they die. Let's say it is halachacly okey to donate eyes, well why is okey for eyes but no other part of the body?

I would guess that it's because, like SaraYehudis said, donating a kidney does not threaten the life of the donor, a person does not need two kidneys to function normaly. She also, said that the organs would have to be harvested while the person is still alive, ( I think that was SY) , so ssuming that you wanna take a kidney from someone who's dying, you have to do it while he's alive, BUT by doing so, you would hasten his death, assuming he is only being kept alive for the purpose of harvesting his kidney.

Also, I would guess that if one donates a kidney while alive and well, the kidney will eventually get buried, except it'll happen when the recipient dies What But that just my reasoning, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

But wouldn't that be true for any part that was transplanted? I'm not sure, but I think the whole kidney thing is because you have a "spare" kidney. As someone else said, you only need one, so donating the 2nd is not hastening your own death.

I posted this on sept 10 and it is eerie
that

sadly - this subject happened in "real life "just last week
the person donated his liver to the first person on the waiting list

it is consoling that his death
gave LIFE to anther person.
