My family has been making the basic sponge cake for YEARS. It is the men in our family's favorite cake!
Also the basic pancakes, easy pizza dough, matza balls, the vegetabe quiche recipe is also delish.

Agreed! And btw, the note by that recipe that says "Do not substitute oil for shortening"? Don't believe it! Comes out great with oil! (Do not adjust the amount when using oil.) I even use the oil in the icing. And I find it only needs about 2/3 of the icing recipe.
I also love the oven fried chicken recipe (maybe it's called breaded baked chicken). I use the same coating for my schnitzel (and I fry that in the oven too) and I always get compliments on it.
I can't believe this cookbook is out of print - that's like challah going out of style!

this is my oldest and fav cookbook
only one recipe flops for me.
my ds found a recipe in there for caramel squares, and asked me to make it for shabbos.
awful is not the word. so I thought I made a mistake and tried twice more. same same.
has anyone else tried this recipe?
other than that, everything I've made from there (probably tried 90% of the recipes) has come out perfect.

I also love this cookbook but so many of the recipes in the cakes, cookies and dessert sections call for marg or shortening.
please post which recipes you have tried with oil only and have been happy with the results. thanks.

off the top of my head:
choc chip cookies (use a bit less oil than marg)
brownies (I also substitute cocoa for chocolate)
knish dough

I never use margarine or shortening, always substitute with oil. has worked in everything except sugar cookies. for those, I use the earths balance vegan sticks.
hmmm maybe thats what went wrong with my caramel squares...

I LOVE this cookbook! I actually only bought it because lot's of people on here swear by it, and I bought it when they went back in print chanukah time. Everything I tried from there came out perfect! I always wanted a cookbook that had a lot of "staple" recipes that I needed...
