if it was in the middle of the day, I would call my mother. she is always reachable, sitting at the same desk every day for the past 15 years. I can't always reach dh, as his cellphone is never working properly.
do you know why there were sirens?

Do you mean "whom would you call if you were ch"v about to die and could make just one call?", "whom would you call if you were arrested and could make just one call?" or "whom would you call if you needed help to solve a problem and could make just one call?"
1. dh, of course. Or 911 if I thought that would help.
2. dh, who would in turn call the lawyer for me.
3. someone who has expertise in the area of concern.
However, I'm rethinking this. DH uses a cellphone and only rarely do I actually get through to him.
1. same answer. I'd leave dh my farewell message on his voicemail (and then wouldn't he feel guilty for not answering!).
2. I'd call the lawyer myslef and have him notify dh of my whereabouts (for which service the lawyer would doubtless charge me by the hour).
3. same answer.
