DH and I both grew up more modern out of town with somersault.
all the frummie types in school and in NY camps called it a "tumblesauce"
it word grates on my nerves so bad. it's like AAHH-rhenge for orange.
of course now my kids come home from school saying tumblesauce.
best guess it's a NY thing that frum people picked up.

I've heard somersault and tumblesault used interchangably, although the former is the correct term.
Tumblesauce sounds like a 3 year old mispronoucning tunblesault.

Ha - I was going to post that I grew up in a secular Jewish home on Long Island, and we called it a tumblesault. I think it may be a NY Jewish thing, not just frum.

Oh, do I hear you on this one. Drives me crazy!!! Sometimes I just feel like telling these people, "If you want to talk like NY, go back to NY."
But I don't, because I'm a nice person...

I grew up knowing both, however tumblesauce was used primarily between my friends. Btw tumblesauce is not in the dictionary (at least when I checked).

In the same vein,
When did a handbag become a pocketbook?

I agree that it just may be a NY thing. I also grew up in a secular home (in Brooklyn) and my mother called it a tumblesauce.

I first heard the term 'tumblesauce' about 18 years ago when I went to Monsey. I just figured it was a NY thing.

LA: somersault, purse, backpack, and by the way, we say "dinner" not "supper" just in case that controversy comes up somewhere in this thread.

I grew up in California, in a secular home. I always said, and spelled it "summer-salt"! Never heard of tumblesauce before, but I think it's adorable.
So, couch, sofa or davenport? Pants or trousers?

Growing up we called it a tumble-over, has anyone else also heard of that? I also knew somersault but didn't use it.

That is so funny. In my world, only old ladies call it a pocketbook and have been calling it that since the 30's and 40's.

I call it a somersault. My kids (growing up in London) call it a roly poly. You have to say it roh-ly poh-ly or it doesn't have quite the same effect

I've from the UK and have never heard tumblesauce! I've never heard of a davenport either.
Oh, and I say both pants and trousers but not for the same item!
Sidewalk or pavement? Drainpipe or downspout? Icing or frosting? Brass knuckles or knuckleduster?
Back to tumblesauce, does anyone know what the Yiddish word for that it? It is funny how people are saying that only yeshivish people say tumblesauce. I can't imagine when a yeshivish person would need that word
