I'm finally shopping for a gas range (which I always wanted, but I only just got a gas line installed). I really like the ranges with Mechanical controls, because of the increased power (usually has much higher BTU then those with electrical controls), I love the commercial look, and the lack of breakable parts (can easily last for 25 years without a service call)
My one issue is, that because of the lack of electronics, there isnt self clean. I'm really nervous about this since I always had self clean, and wondering is its really hard to clean since the pilot light is obviously always on.
Would love to hear the opinion on people who have such a range.

I have one now. No comment
Switching to a gas range with digital controls (at least for the oven, not the range/stovetop) and self-clean when I move.

I have the kind of range you are describing. I love it. It is not so hard to clean. I just spray it the night before and let it the oven cleaner sit. (Making sure I really hit the spots where anything has dripped and putting newspaper down to catch any drips on the floor.
The next day I wash it out with shmattas and water. Toss the shmattas and I'm done. I'm very careful about how I cook, so I don't have a lot of burned food in the bottom, though.

I have a gas range with mechanical controls -- in fact, I have 2 of them!
It's worth the once a year cleaning to get the ease of use/temperature control on yomim tovim.

thanks for ur responses. I really want one, it's only the cleaning that makes me nervous.
Which company/model do you have? What do you like, or not like about it?
I have looked at a few companies that I liked and weren't way to expensive - in the $4000 range (like I love the Wolf, but not the price tag, redoing a kitchen means 7 new appliances at once!) so far I'm liking the Viking, the American Range and DCS. Would love to hear if anyone has any of those companies and what they think of it.
