I'm certainly not questioning the psak of the rabbonim, but what did our ancestors do with their water? Their water was certainly not filtered and as it also wasn't chlorinated or cleaned in any way, it must have contained such organisms too. Why was this never an issue?

Maybe they weren't so familiar with how things work sarahd or maybe then there was no choice. But once one knows why not go the extra step it can't hurt, and costs nonething but a peace of mind!

you can use plain cheese cloth.
Cheap & effective.

that's what was said at first
Kashrus magazine had an article where they didn't recommend it any longer, or if you're going to use it anyway, to use many layers, change often ...

I looked over the letter -
nowhere does it say that it's not reccomended
and it's done by lubavich bais din, so it is not applicable to everybody
Thre are Rabbeim who hold that this is not a problem. When I'll go to NY, I'll find out what our Rav thinks about it.
A few things made me wonder:
it says that if food was cooked w/ unfiltered water it may be eaten....
and
utencils washed w. unfiltered water need to be rinsed or dried. Rinsing & drying are not the same thing
Just wondering.......

I quoted the article in Kashrus magazine, not that link

it's R' Elyashiv and numerous other non-chasidic poskim who say the water must be filtered with a filter
though others, like Rabbi Belsky, disagree
I'm wondering about all this too.

the link you provided says C Heights bais din.
I have no clue as to what other Rabbeim say & untill it becomes a practical question, do not really care
but thanks for the info

the article is not a psak
it's taken from the OU Fact Sheet on NYC Water (so in that sense, perhaps it represent the OU's psak)
it describes the creature, explains why they are present in the water, and discusses different methods of filtering them out of the water
it doesn't quote any rabbis, though the entire article has as its premise that the bugs are a problem and you need to get rid of them
I am surprised that the article does not acknowledge dissenting opinions.

How do they know it's only New York water (is that all of New York or the whole state?)? Maybe other cities also have the problem?
