I would like to use some 'read-aloud' time as an incentive in my classroom. I'm looking to find a good jewish chapter book that students in my 2nd grade won't have read yet, but that they'll understand and is on their level (not to read themselves, but for me to read to them a few pages at a time.) Any suggestions?

thanks for the suggestions.
I'm looking for somethign that is well beyond their reading level, so that it won't be something the kids have already read. isn't savta simcha an easy reader?
I'd like a real novel, if possible.
any other ideas?

Savta Simcha is not so long and novel-y, but it's not such easy reading either. It's great bedtime story read aloud material, but for your class - it'd be appropriate but you might want to look for something more sophisticated, too.

How about Number the Stars? I think I remember our teacher reading that aloud to us at that age.

Number the Stars is not a Jewish book, despite having Jewish characters. Also, I think it's too mature for second graders. They wouldn't appreciate it. While we're on the topic, though, it's a great book for older kids who have lower reading levels because thematically it is mature but the actual reading level is not so difficult.

My DD wants me to send chapter books for DGD (2nd grade, overseas, homeschooled but she does pretty well) that DGD can read herself. Slightly different request, but I'd appreciate any suggestions of suitable books.

Bubby - easy chapter books on a 2nd grade reading level are
The Bentzi series (feldheim)
Hachai's "fun-to-read-series"
Dov Dov
Rabbi Juravel (Vol 1-4)
Kids speak

Or if your granddaugther is not ready for the chapter books yet you could try shorter books such as the Machanayim series "Tales from Tzaddikim"
