I use both.

I find that dept store eyeshadow is generally better, mascara too.

The main reason I'll buy dept store makeup is b/c I can try it on!

For items you throw out often, like mascara, I would say buy drug store brand. You dont need expensive mascara, and Maybelline GreatLash is one of the best out there.

I use to love maybelline greatlash (& still use it sometimes) but I absolutely LOVE Lancome Flextencils- goes on so beautiful! maybelline is always so clumpy- flextencils does the job without that clumpiness. I still use maybelline though when I dont want to spend so much:)

I like using Prescriptive mascara. I used to buy drug store mascara until a friend gave me her Prescriptives mascara sample. Since then, this is the only one I like. It's less clumpy than other brands I've tried (and believe me, I've tried tons!)

The reason I made my point about mascara is because apparently, you are only supposed to use it maximum 5 months because of eye infections etc. I did not make that information up, ask any makeup artist, and they will tell you that mascara is NOT supposed to be kept long.
With that in mind, I would NEVER buy an expensive mascara. Its just not worth it.

I swear by Trish Macevory lash curling mascara. It stays on so well, and so long. I never get clumps and it doesnt smudge. It is quite expensive though. I use it for 3 months and then I purchase a new one. When u wear it every day for 3 months, its used up anyway!!

I use a drugstore moisterizer for the summer, with SPF, but all the rest of my makeup is from department stores. I jsut find the quality to be far superior. cheap drugstore lipstics have a bad taste to me.

I agree about the cheap lipsticks, they taste bad and feel very heavy on the lips. I don't like to "feel" my makeup.

Also, to Faige - are you sure channel is the same as Bobbi brown??? I thought MAC and Bobbi brown and Estee lauder were all owned by one company. In fact, I'm pretty sure because my friend headed this fundraiser and bobbi brown donated estee lauder and bobbie brown make-up. ALSO, my mother tries to buy mainly american or jewish owned brands and she told me that all those companies were good because they are all owned by one jewish owner. What

I also like the Bobbi Brown brand. I know many of these are owned by the same company, but maybe they use different ingredients and formulas to make their stuff.

Still, for eyeliner I use Revlon. It has always worked for me and I don't have a very steady hand, this one I have had no problems with.

Even though they're made by the same companies, it's probably not all the same quality. Try Bobbi brown eyeshadow, you'll (most likely) see that the pigment isn't as thick as MAC.

It's like Old Navy, Gap, and Banana. All three stores are owned by Gap Company, but the quality is different.

I only use department store makeup I don't care about the cost, it lasts much longer, and looks more natural, doesn't clump, or streak, and everyone that works there is so helpful, I find I spend more money on drugstore going back e/ week, then dept stores where I go once a year, I love trish's brushes- they're amazing and a worthy investment, chanel and bobby brown has such nice colors also

I've heard even 3 months. I read a magazine article about someone rich and famous who uses only expensive brands but goes cheap on mascara for that reason exactly.

I usually wear Mac stuff plus drugstore moisturizer and cheap mascara. I like Stila blush (creamy) and a lot of their other products but I don't buy it too often b/c it is expensive. I won't go near Prescriptives probably for a dumb reason but too bad! My mother got a coupon for a free makeup session from them and gave it to me to use and the person was NASTY!

There is a drugstore chain, I think it is Rite Aid, that will let costumers return makeup if the color is not good on them. I would suggest checking with them before buying to see if that policy is still good.

GR- they don't resell it! They do it so people feel confident buying, and most are probably too lazy to return the makeup if it doesn't look right.

The few times I've purchased department store makeup, I am usually disappointed that it's not as good as and way more expensive than the drugstore stuff. Covergirl continuous wear foundation is awesome, in terms of coverage and skin tone matching. Maybelline and Covergirl make really good, long-lasting eyeshadows. (On that note, I put white eyeliner on above the black that lines my eyes and then put eyeshadow on top of that and it brightens my eyes, but also the eyeshadow stays put really well.)

Also, regarding pencils, I read that they are all essentially made the same, so the Wet n' Wild brand for 99 cents is excellent!
