My brother married a non-jew and his 4 boys were all accepted into their local chabad school...........kind of makes you wonder. Now his eldest child is preparing for his bar-mitzvah. The whole thing makes me so sad.
I just hope that none of his kids ever go on birthright because we'll have a lot of shailos to ask when their non-Jewish children want to come to our home for shabbos.

As far as I know all the Jewish day schools in England do not accept children who are not halachically Jewish. I always understood that the main reason is that by attending the school the community sees them as Jewish and this could lead to intermarriage later, ch"v.

I'm not going to speak for all of them, but I know Chabad houses that do accept non jews ask a Rav first.
it has to do with not turning away the Jewish father.

Right, the child is seen as a vehicle to getting to the father, as far as I understand.

Ruchel, I don't understand. Did you turn away the wannabe convert 3 times? That's the halacha- u can't just say ok- u want to do it -let's do it. you have to convince her that it's hard & push her away (from becoming jewish) 3 times. u can teach her sheva mitzvos bnei noach (wouldn't she be happy with just that, by the way?)
um.. what's the point of bris certificate? besides it looking nice for scrapbook? seriously

Because of the intermariage problem. I don't want it to happen to my future children c'v if I have to send them there.

Some schools ask for the bris certificate.
As for the wannabe convert, I can't convert her, so I can't sent her away either. I can just teach her what she wants to know and help her not misunderstand things she had already learned on her own. I told her about the noachide mitsvos, she's not interested because she wants to be Jewish. She thinks it's her right as a descendent of Jews converted by force, and honestly I can understand that.
I have told her it's hard, esp. in Portugal where there is nothing and I'm not sure Jews are appreciated there. But she wants to emigrate to Israel, she is already keeping shabbes and as much kashrus as she can, she is tsnanua, she knows she will have to keep th, she is ok with everything.
I have told her only a beis din can accept her or not, but she wants to learn anyway. Not to mention I have seen people who were less dedicated and less "frum" than she is being converted, and she keeps the mitsvos now better than some converts...

I'm not sure what u mean.
do u mean that since u don't do the actual conversion u can't be the one to push her away & only beis din can push her away since they're the ones that do the comversion? To refute that, a poster (mali) brought an example earlier about naomi dissuading her 2 dil & she's definitely not beis din
I just hope that this portuegese lady is for real & her knowledge doesn't become a two-edged sword

Yes that's what I mean. But was there a beis din to convert Ruth? We can't do things like at Biblical times. I think this argument is dangerous because reform people use it for many things... like female mohel (Tsipora).

No way, I have pics of her, I have talked to her for hours and hours. She's just a high school girl, nothing scary...

Of course there was. It says (I think in the Gemora) that Boaz and his Beis Din converted Ruth (and there was a halachic problem there to solve that a Moabite is forbidden to convert and there they learned the halacha that a Moabite is forbidden, but a Moabitess can)

and I think there is no problem with a female mohel, though I'd like to look it up. halachically there's no problem with a female shochet(es) for example (anyone volunteer? ). there is only a problem with a female rabbi or a female scribe. FYI

Yes, you're right. We can't learn practical halacha today from what was done in Biblical times. We have to ask a rav what the halacha is today. So did you?? (about your potential converts)

Nope, in my circles we only ask for very important problems... I asked opinions around me though, no one thought it was a problem.

So your circles are doing the wrong thing, because geirus is a very serious issue, not one to be taken lightly.
Others' opinions don't really matter.
