Anyone have good ideas as to what to do with the children, especially activities which are cheap?
I'll give one to start (not my own)
You can make a restaurant / felafel store/ pizza store. Spend the morning cooking and preparing. They can also make signs etc. Set out the room appropriately and you have a cheap, really fun activity plus the bonus of lunch for everyone.
I did this last year with my girls. One day they bought pittot, chopped up salads, cut up chips (french fries), mixed up falafel mix. Then they set it all up on the table like a take-away counter and served the hungry Torah learners who came back for lunch. Another day we made pizza.
OK, now over to you.

That sounds like fun. How old are your daughter?

another cooking idea, for older kids.
Give your kids a list of ingredients, and they have to make something (edible) from it. I remember doing this with my sisters, we had lots of fun.
Whoevers tastes best, wins.

How about Cookie Baking....
My Mom used to do this with us when we were kids.
I have such great memories.
She used to make about 6 colores of cookie dough.
and we used to spend hours making different shapes out of them.
You can use Cookie Cutters etc...
Also:
Colorful Sprinkles
Chocolate Sprinkles
Chocolate Chips
Raisins
Chopped Nuts
Coconut
We had a lot of fun. and we had lots of cookies to snack on for the rest of the week.
I'll try to post the recipe later....

They are now 12, 10.5 and 6.5. I'm sure you could do it with younger ones if you help out more. (They were also a year younger last summer)
Rifky and Mishie, thanks for the great ideas.

If you have younger kids, you can spend a couple weeks collecting 'groceries' eg: cereal boxes, egg cartons bottles (wash them out) etc etc.
Then your kids set them out like a grocery store and play shopping.
