The other day one of my son's yeshiva rebbes had to repair something and he told my son that he was using my wedding gift to him to repair it. What was the gift? A set of tools. Several years ago when that couple got married, I gave them a tool box filled with hammer, screwdrivers, wrench, etc. I usually like to give tool sets or mezuzahs for wedding gifts. I have been told over and over that the tool kit was the most useful thing they got? Any other ideas?

A set of tools is a great gift. So is luggage. Someone gave me some and I use them for every trip!
Personally, one of my favorite gifts was also an emulsion blender with some attachments. I use that a lot too.

Wow, luggage. That is a good idea. And if you give it to them in a different city than where they will live, it will come in useful instead of being a whole packing shipping overweight shlep!!!

Wow, never in a million years would I have imagined tools as a wedding gift, very original and extremely practical, bet they didn't get duplicates, now mezuzah's I don't like so much, got soooooooooo many of them and mostly not to my taste.

I am horrible at picking out gifts.

Give CASH or something off of the wedding registry.

I hate it when people think they know better than the chassan and kallah and try to think outside of the box - that's why we got stuck with FOUR wine fountains and several mezuzahs that we don't need.

Folks, we registered for a reason. If people are going to spend money on us, it would be nice if it was on something we could actually use.

Tools are great (assuming the couple doesn't already have a kit), but I would've been annoyed if I'd gotten them as we already had two toolkits and random tools. Ahem. . . again, that's why people register! So they're not stuck with junk they have no use for!!!

I registered for practical things, but enjoyed getting "pretty gifts". However, I didn't end up with too many duplicate gifts; that would've been annoying.

Defy, not everyone registers for gifts; in fact, I can't think of anyone off-hand that I know of who did. Maybe my SIL 23 years ago. So if you have to think of a gift on your own, a tool-box would not be a bad idea at all.

I liked getting silver as wedding presents, because even if someone gave you cash when are you going to go out and treat yourself to a nice silver-challah plate, bechers, menorah, lighter, match, bowl, vase (ye the list doesn't end) the answer is not so often, but if someone gets u it as a gift u dont have any guilt for spending money on it! also its something that doesn't run out, wear out, throw out. and if you get the same silver challah board three times (like me) then you just go and exchange it for something else silver you want

first thing I thought of when I saw this thread: luggage! (as already mentioned).
you never know what gifts the couple may be getting lots of. For me, I was so so happy when, several months after my wedding, someone gave us a challah board!

I can't think of anyone who didn't register. In America it seems to be the norm.

All I know is that I have tons of gifts that people thought were so clever - and guess what? They weren't!

If people don't register, that's their own problem, but if they do, and you know where they registered, buy them something off the registry! You might as well spend money on something they need instead of wasting it on something that's going to sit in the attic and collect dust.

And if you're still intent on getting the ultimate gift - include a GIFT RECEIPT!!!!! (Just in case your seemingly clever gift isn't so ultimate for the chassan and kallah).

The only gift that wasn't off the registry that I like is the Shabbos lamp. That's one thing I wouldn't have minded getting several of.

I've sometimes bought for a couple close to us:
Buy a pail / garbage bin/ huge plastic bowl and fill it with all those little things that you have to go out and buy for yourselves- potato peeler, broom, cleaning brushes, sink tidies, squeegies for the countertops, potato masher etc etc. It's very original, people like it and good especially for a couple who have it hard financially since those things add up and also get forgotten.
I wouldn't buy it for people I don't know well, because it might look silly.

Before giving tools and mezuzzahs I asked one of the mothers to find out if the chosson already owned tools or if they wanted a particular k'sav of mezuzzah. Sometimes the family was having to pay for mezuzzahs and was glad to get it as gifts.
Here in Detroit there are 3 types of bridal showers, a hostess shower, a bedroom shower, and a registry shower. Let me define:
1)Hostess shower: about 20 ladies each pitch in a sum of money (say $100) and with that $2000 they buy everything that the couple needs to start off, even some furniture. There is a woman with a basement warehouse with every type of household supplies and Shabbos supplies and usually the hostesses shop there because it is non-profit. This was originally done for poor kallahs but in order not to embarass anyone, it became the norm here. The "guests" at the hostess shower are the hostesses and female relatives of chosson and kallah.
2)Bedroom shower: Money is raised and basic necessities are purchased. The gifts are arranged in the kallah's bedroom while she is out of the house. She comes home and surprise! This saves on refreshments and is good for a "quiet" kallah who doesn't want to open gifts for an audience.
3)Registry shower: invitations are sent out to every woman on the chassunah guest list and they are given the names of the stores where the kallah is registered. Hopefully that is where the guests shop.
