What do you think of the publicizing of pictures from the Holocaust of naked women?

Is this something those women would have wanted? To have their picture hanging in Yad Vashem? in books? in videos?

Someone's mother, sister, wife ...

Isn't it disrespectful to them? Confused

You're 100% right.

And there are other things.
What about parts of bodies used in e.g. soap, that are in museums instead of being buried and giving kavod hameis?

What about torn sifrei Torah and seforim stuck in cases instead of being put in geniza? This is a real bizayon.

And whole seforim which should be used?

Unfortunately it seems that those running such museums are not overly concerned with halacha. Crying

Hmm... I see ur point, but at the same time I think that it's important that the world sees the atrocities that took place. We have to make sure that the world - jews ang non jews alike NEVER forget the holocaust, and by displaying such disturbing images, they are engraved into the viewers' minds.

As long as the world remembers and is aware of the horror, it ensures that it will never be allowed to happen again (at least I like to think so Confused )

As far as the images of naked women - would they want to be seen like that?

I think they would want the world to know what kind of monsters the nazis were.

Yes but you still have warped people who r going to deny it. Besides only Moshiach can save us from another holocaust which will be a nucleur one far worse then that what we have ever known .Thats why we should be davening for moshiach to come rather then putting up these memorials Confused

These bodies were not only mutiliated in their lifetime but too after their death and the very pics the Nazis took of naked women we the Jewish people r exhibiting even if it towards a so called good cause..... Who knows how much spiritual Tzar we r causing them Crying

I've always felt offended on behalf of the people in the pictures. we are very careful to treat a mes (deceased body) with the utmost tznius and respect b/c to do otherwise would cause the neshomoh anguish. If the neshomoh knows what's being done to the body, I see no reason to believe it doesn't know what's being done to pictures.

its part of the horror that the world needs to see. if all anyone sees is covered up bodies buried in lovely cemeteries instead of mass graves full of skeletons, the horror is minimized. it is like it wasn't so bad.

I DON"T always HAVE to disagree, you know! This is certainly not a topic I'm gonna start a heated arguement about, AND Tefila is certainly NOT "out to lunch", she made an excellent point!

Also, It must be the heat here in NYC! I'm too hot to argue, lol!

But if someone CHV raped and killed your daughter, would you say that people needed to see pictures to realize the horror? Or would you keep that private because it's not respectful to the victim?

that's a good analogy. If I wanted to make sure the jury convicted the rapist or the police caught the torturers or whatever, I would do everything I had to do even if it was very personally painful. On the other hand, if it was just for a memorial, I would not put those photos up.

do you also similarly object to photos of suicide bombings and beheadings ? I think pictures make a sharp impact on a person eliciting a visceral reaction. sometimes society needs that.

I think there are plenty of other pictures besides the naked ones that can show the evil things the Nazis did. Sad

To answer the original question, I think NO WAY should these pictures be shown especially in SUCH a public way (I remember that's the first picture you see when you walk into the museum at Yad Vashem). It is totally disrepectful.

I think it is horrible that they show these pictures not only for the woman but also the men. What happens to those that have relatives in the pictures and they see it in these muesems how do you think they feel? Or maybe one of them are in the picture and they are standing looking at themselves? Where is the respect like one of the above said there are so many other pictures that can help show people what animals they really were these nazis.

In halacha, the end never justifies the means. Of course it's assur to degrade these people (as it is assur for people, especially men to look at pictures of naked women). Even if tremendous benefit were to come from it (which I doubt) the end doesn't justify the means.
