I used to teach 2nd grade in an all-girls school, and every week I chose a 'student of the week' who was able to wear a silver necklace that said "talmidas hashavuah" on it in hebrew. the girls really felt special because of this.

In the fall, I"ll be teaching 2nd grade co-ed, and I want to do something similar. I think I'll still use a necklace for the girls (though I need to buy one, as the other one was borrowed). I'm not sure what to use for the boys. The two best suggestions so far have been a yarmulka or a kiddush cup. What do you think?

Will a yarmulka be gross because it's worn by different people? If I do go with a becher, would I want silver-plated or nickel or what? obviously sterling silver is best but it's also expensive. Does anyone know of a store that would engrave it for me and mail it to where I live? Any other ideas?

I want something nice that can have the words 'talmid hashavua' on it. Some teachers do a backpack full of games but that's not what I'm looking for. I've also seen a pretty siddur done, but I think that's better for older grades. All suggestions are welcome!

Let me see if I understand: this is not something like an Academy Award that the winner gets to take home and keep, but something that is worn or used by the winner and goes back to the teacher at the end of the week? Then a kippah is out. Is the kid wearing this all week or just at Oneg Shabbat on Friday? If the former, I don't see what use the becher would be.

Why not get a lapel button, that can be worn on the shirt, for both genders? Order a few so if it gets lost or "borrowed" you're not left in the lurch. http://www.cafepress.com/make/custom-buttons

I worked in a boys yeshiva where they gave out a bechor (sp?). The boys felt special getting to use it on shabbos.

louche- I want something really nice and special. a button seems a little more plain.

choc moose- what's wrong with the title? it's a slash to show gender- talmid/talmidas. things are often written like that in hebrew, like we might write child(ren).

mha- do you have any idea where I could get one? I've been looking online without much luck, and there are no judaica stores where I live.

The bechor sounds like a cute idea, but I would kasher between each child.

When I was in second grade, the teacher had a siddur decorated beautifully -- velvet, gold thread, the works. The student who was the chazanit got to use it that day, and the talmida hashavua got to bring it home, in its special gold foil decorated box, to use for shabbos.

My boys have brought home either a Becher for use on Shabbos and also a trophy that is engraved.

Depending on the parents and circles, some may not want a kippa with writings, or not the "right" colour, etc...
Maybe the talmid hashavuah can be shabbat aba/ima?

thank you everyone for your responses!
I'm still torn....

becher- expensive, one family does not have a good standard of kashrus, and it could only say talmid or talmidas which is kind of blah for the girls.

yarmulka- I'd have to wash it between kids, so I'd need two. still pretty cheap though. all families here would be ok with a black velvet one with lettering.

watch- not so much my type. it could also be easily broken.

siddur- I feel like it's better for older kids. plus, the boys who daven in the yeshiva couldn't even bring it on Shabbos because it is out of the eruv.

trophy- not my type.

shabbos ima/abba- they don't do that in older grades. and also, the kid doesn't bring anything home.

so I'm leaning toward the necklace and yarmulka... I think that's my best bet. two (or even three) yarmulkas so I can wash between kids. what size is best? 4 or 5?

many of the boys here do not wear ties...

I went ahead and ordered 2 yarmulkas. I'll wash them between kids.
