If Ethel is the same as Ettel, it's origin is from Esther. There are those who call their daughter Esther “Etty” and some would later change it back to Esther.

ETHEL is from the Anglo-Saxon, meaning NOBLE
Hebrew equivalents for noble -
Feminine - Adene, Adina, Adira, Adiva, Hoda, Malka, Meroma, Nedavia, Nedaviah, Nedavya, Nediva, Needara, Nesicha, Nediva, Negida, Sarah, Yisraela

Is Etel from "adel" (Germanic root, noble) or Esther or even Yehudit? Hard to say. So I would keep the name as is.
