When you're fasting, what do you think about and focus on, especially today, the start of the 3 weeks.

I find it very hard/impossible to connect, and just find myself thinking about the fact that I cannot drink all day and it's boiling hot.

Do you want the honest answer? I basically spend the day counting down to the end of the fast, and praying that I make it without getting too sick, and thanking my lucky stars that my husband is a good faster and can help me with the kids.
It's nice to have a reminder that there's more to this day than that. Thanks! If anyone has anything inspiring to share, I'd love to get some inspiration!

Hmmm. We are chasidish, and we are not makpid to fast, at least not for women and girls.
We fast only on Tisha Baav and Yom Kippur. I may not fast, but I will push off eating until I feel I really need to eat.
On a fasting day I will eat as much as I need, but no more. I will probably eat later in the day, and then the meal together with the ones fasting.
However, I do think about the churban bais hamikdosh, and how wonderful it would be if Moshiach would come and rebuild the third one, and golus will end.
I read the current issues of the Heimishe newspapers and magazines with plenty of articles about the churban and other issues.
I think about everyone needing a yeshua and daven for them to be helped.
I thank Hashem for everything that He does and continues to do for us.
I will prepare food for whoever is fasting.
Lshana Habaa B'Yerushalayim!

I find it helpful to read a bit about the history of the day. It may also be nice to focus on giving tzedakah regularly throughout the day (try a few cents every hour or something) to rectify the cause of the fast.

It is also helpful and inspirational to spend some time learning about and thinking of the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash.

Same here Grandmama Smile

When I fast, I'm generally sick and end up in bed, and I don't think of anything. On minor fasts and when I have a heter for not fasting "bigger" fast, then, I can make it meaningful.

On Tisha Baav when I must fast, I try to sleep a lot which makes the long day go by faster. No pun intended. On Yom Kippur as most of the day I am in shul, I find the day goes by pretty quickly all by itself.
I am so emotional lately on Yom Kippur, that I find the day is not long enough! I usually feel fine. Only the last hour or two, do I feel a slight headache. I feel like the old lady in shul, and remember how as a child I used to wonder why the old ladies cried so much. Now I am that old lady. Its weird.
