I was doing some shopping and almost got hit TWICE! I had a walk sign and was half way across th e street when a turning car came rushing toward me. This happned twice! shock The first driver wasn't exactly looking at the road (or me and my carriage for that matter) and just drove right at me. B"H nothing happened but he made a gesture that seemed to say "what were you doing in the street lady?" Then on a different intersection the same exact incident happened just with a different driver and that time if I would'nt have ran out of the way...
Pale Shaking Pale Shaking
So I want to know, what are the rules in NY who really has the right of way? Maybe we should have bridges for pedestrians so that drivers can recklessly turn the corner without even slowing down. Rolling Eyes

as far as I know the pedestrian has the right of way and the cars have to wait. but new yorkers are nuts when it comes to driving. I was ones walking with my son in the stroler and I was crossing the street and this lady was turning if I would not react quickly god forbid she would hit us, she didnt even see me cross its like she was in complete oblivion. people here drive crazy

pedestrian in a crosswalk has the right of way, but when you're ch"v dead, your having the r-o-w makes no diff. You have to assume, when walking or driving in NYC, that every driver is a homicidal maniac: Yes, as a matter of fact, I do own the road, how dare you be in it, and I get points for every pedestrian I hit. The only consolation is that your family can file a wrongful death suit against the driver if they can catch him after he hits and runs. Sorry for the gallows humor, but dem's da facts!

My driver's ed teacher drilled into us: You never have right of way until it has been given to you.
Basically, the law gives the right of way to the pedestrian, but if you're the pedestrian and the car is not going to stop, don't walk out into the street.

It's really scary! I'm always very careful about crossing streets, waiting for the light, watching to see if there are any turning vehicles... But I was already crossing the street. I was almost near the sidewalk I was heading toward. Why oh why must crossing a street be true mesiras nefesh? Mad

I've seen it too many times, unfortunately. The car has a red light and he zooms right past me as though I'm the one with the "don't walk'' sign.
You can never be too cautious with these things. Fugetabout being right, just focus on staying alive.
My sister got hit by one of those maniacs, she was in a bad state, b''h she's fine now.
May Hashem watch over you from when you leave til when you come back home.
