I burned myself today, by grabbing a hot pot lid with my bare hands. While I was standing near the sink running my fingers under cold water, I was able to think about important topics like oven mitts. However, I also realized what I had screamed as I grabbed the lid, and I was very proud of myself.
The magic word? "Ouch!" Not "shoot" or a more colorful term.
I realized though, that I don't have a good term to use when I mess something up, like I just locked my keys in the car. What do you say? I use "Oh, man!" or "shoot" or something along those lines, but I'd rather say something more aidel. Any suggestions?
(BTW, B"H my hand seems to be OK.)

yekkes: Schreck.
dati-leumi israelis: la-aza.
other israelis: la-azazel.
pseudo-french brooklynites: moyduh.
ado annie: foot.
"oh, man' is not aidel enough? then "bless my soul" "dear me" "good grief" "oh, mercy" "your father's mustache" and "phooey" aren't going to meet your standards either. stick to "ouch".

In high school my friend told me to say cheese and crackers in place something else that sounds similar (yoshke).
Before I got married and a little bit afterwards, I used to say mommy.
