this is to sound crazy but I used to have a girl in my class who was one of a triplet in her family she had: 3 sets of twins and 2 sets of triplets...no singles....

the good news is that when you start off with twins - you're used to the juggling ...

B'h
Yes this happend to me too. Though 19yrs ago . After my oldest child was only a few months Having a shock finding out I was preg with first set of twins to have another shock a week later I was in active labour at 27 weeks 2lbs each........... .
One of the babys only lived a day due to respitory problems, the other is B'h doing really well u would never know how small he was
Fast forward now, A number of children later I had a set of twins boy and girl . B'h at five yr old they are doing really well.
Once you have one set of twin you are according to stats, 4x more likely for it to happen again. Even as in my case no medication or family history is used or known.

I went to school with a girl who had 2 sets of twins in her family (she was the only singleton). Both sets were boy/girl and both sets were born on the same day a few years apart!

louche, my first set just turned 4 years old.
Wow .. 3 , 4 sets of twins ... I can't say we are quite onto that yet!
Ironic really as I myself am a twin! |
OMG.
DH's dream is to have twins, but I always "cool" him off on that idea because I am an identical twin myself, and was always told that is skips a generation, lol:)

I hate to burst your bubble but identical twins do not skip a generation.......they are completely non-genetic.

It's amazing to hear of so many repeat multiples in families. My husband will be excited when I tell him. He really wants another set of twins.

Well then, not as ironic as it is genetic! | Not a given.
MetroMom wrote: | Actually, if you are a fraternal twin then it is definitely genetic....not ironic. | It is not a definite.

It doesn't have to skip a generation.

AFAIK ID twins can sometime be genetic. But I'm going to dig up some studies.

The "skipping a generation" phenomenon is usually in the case of male fraternal twins. They often have the gene for multiple ovulation (on the mother's X chromosome that she passes down) but as a male this has no effect. If he has a daughter he can pass that tendency on to her so that she has fraternal twins, hence skipping a generation.
In female it may not skip a generation. And that particular gene may not be passed down, or may be passed to a sibling who isn't a twin themselves whilst the twin doesn't get it. Luck of the draw.
But yes, identical twins are non-genetic though I've heard of families with numerous sets and in numerous generations (I knew a boy who was an identical twin, both parents were identical twins, one of the grandparents was also). Very unusual. I've heard speculation over it being something to do with the father's sperm in such cases but I don't think it has been proven either way.
My father's a fraternal twin but I will be surprised if I have any myself. I guess one never knows but I don't think I do multiple ovulation.
There's a woman in Australia with two sets of quads a year apart or something ridiculous but they were IVF and I don't know why any dr in their right mind would do it again so quickly and with so many embryos after she had a high order multiple pregnancy the first time....

I have a feeling that a lot of these families with more than one pair of multiples - especially those with higher order multiples - are the results of reproductive medication/procedures.

I am only able to have multiples. I only ovulate in multiples. After two multiple pregnancies, one triplet (one didn't survive more than a few days do to micro-preemie respiratory issues) and then one twin, I am now working with a fertility specialist to see if there is any way that I can have a singleton pregnancy. Otherwise they will not allow me to get pregnant again, as I have alot of scarring and another multiple pregnancy would be very dangerous for me.

Of course there is a way. By doing IVF. They would take out both follicles before they ovulate, let them fertilize and then only transfer back one embryo. (of course there is always the slight chance that it might still split afterwards giving you identicles)

Also, IVF isn't that easy and simple as just 'doing it'.

Not everyone is a candidate for IVF. IVF was actually going to be 'the plan' but it didn't work out because of physiological reasons.
