I was asked today to contribute to a joint gift for a kalla. It's a nice idea, but two reasons not to...I would much rather purchase a gift on my own is the first. I think it's a much nicer personal touch. The second is I don't entirely trust the person who will be purchasing the gift and writing the card. She is not fond of our family, so I am worried that even after I have given money, my name would not be included. (Yes, this person would do that.) What do you think I should do?

Give the gift on your own. That is perfectly acceptable.

I generally do not participate in joint gift-giving. I don't like the practice for all sorts of reasons. You should follow your gut on this but do not feel AT ALL disturbed if your gut tells you to buy your own gift and deliver it yourself. I personally think it's nicer like that as well anyhow.....

Definitely give your own gift.

In this case do it yourself. I'm not a huge fan of joint gift-giving, but it also depends on the circumstances. For example, I could spend 120NIS on a crockpot, or I could contribute that same 120NIS to the group gift (usually at work) of something much larger...a food processor/mixer that no one else is likely to give because it's a big ticket item.
