last year, I started doing kriah with an 11-year-old boy. we started from scratch-he didnt know the difference between an aleph and a bais. now, he reads perfectly, and very fluently.
im stopping to do kriah with him next week, so I want to get him a present telling him how proud I am of him. we made a siyum last year and the school gave him a siddur, so thats out. I want it to be something mature, preferably have to do with kriah, and just cost a few dollars.
any ideas? tia!

It's not to do with kriyah, but a few years back I taught a girl kriyah & basic yiddishkeit. At the end of the year I bought her one of the Little Midrash says books. She loved it so much, her mother bought her the rest. Actually, the whole family enjoyed it. I think it's a great book with lots of interesting info for a kid that age who's becoming frum.

A few ideas -- brainstorming here...
How about a yad to start learning for his Bar Mitzvah?
How about making a certificate on your computer that says he's "graduated" from your course?
How about something for him to hang on his wall, some kind of artwork that incorporates the alef-bais in a way that's not too childish?
How about a Hebrew-English milon?

I really like that idea too, except the price! the cheapest I can find is 20. then I was going to get it anyway, but he is really not going to get many seforim for his bar mitzva. as I wrote before, he's not bt-hes very special ed-in SCHI. and he only reads at home with tons of reinforcements...so most people dont even know that he can read, including some of his relatives.
all the ideas would be great if he was a regular-ed kid, but hes not. any other ideas? thanks!

I can't think what (although someone above suggested a yad, which is probably too expensive) but something towards his Bar Mitzva sounds like a good progression, considering his age. Presumably he'll be using the skills you've given him on that occasion. What about a chumash?

thanks so much for the ideas! the only problem is, hes not at a level to be learning chumash. he is VERY proud of the way he reads, and I was really contemplating the yad, but hes not laining for his bar mitzva-hes going up for the aliya and saying the bracha before and after.
thats why im having such a hard time with this; on the one hand I want it to be something mature, but hes really not holding where a regular 12-yr-old is.
also, could a poet or a great writer help me make up a real nice poem or letter to give him, basically saying how well he learned to read-from learning the alef-bais, to reading words, to having great fluency?! I hope im not asking too much! thanks!!
