That's a really good idea, assuming you're buying the klaf, too, and not just an artsy-fartsy case. Mezuzot are expensive!
Other ideas:
--a set of good, basic tools
--gift certificate for meals from a local restaurant or takeout place that delivers
--gift certificate to a place like the Home Depot or Pergament
Some specific info about the people would help. Is this a newlywed couple moving into their first apt., or an established family moving from an apt. to a house? What do they do for a living? A set of tools wouldn't be right if the hubs or the wife is a mechanic or locksmith--they'd already have the basic tools, probably better than the ones you could get--but might be perfect if they're newlyweds and they're a kollel couple or students. If they're going from an apt. to a house with a yard, something like a lawn mower or a gift certificate from a yard maintenance company will be needed come spring.
Ask them if they're registered anywhere. Gift registries are not just for brides any more.
