most english Jews also came from somewhere else in Europe, since Jews were expelled from England. there was a sefardi community from holland/spain here in the 17/18/1900s (as shosh mentioned) but the bulk of the British Jewish community came at the same time as most Jews came to the US - in around 1900, escaping from Pogroms. And some before and after the Holocaust.

So almost all english Jews are from somewhere else.

Not all jew's ancestors are jewish. my husband's ancestry is lithuanian, turkish/greek (saloniki), french, and english. His mother is a giyoress of british decent.

I thought of english gerim, but thats not technically ashkenazi.

right, but my husband is an ashkenazi, not a ger, but with true british ancestry.

My husband's grandparents are from Poland/Ukraine/Russia. The only city I remember for sure is Dubno...oh, and someone hailed from Berditchev also.

We actually have a bunch of letters we want to get translated and hope they'll help to identify more people in his family. My MIL has a bunch of photos that her father glued into an album, completely obscuring the identities written on the back. Now they have so many family members unidentified, and untranslated documents.

(eta to say grandparents instead of parents)

1 set from Berch (I'm sure I spelled it wrong), Galicia

my father's parents were born in Europe
my grandfather from Budapest, Hungary (he spoke with chassidish havarah, but didn't speak yiddish- only hungarian)
my grandmother from Minsk/Baranowitz (this is what her death certificate says)

And the only way I can think of for one's grandparents could have met if they came from different countries was if they met in America.

My paternal grandparents married in the early 1900s (before WWI). My grandmother was from Slovakia and my grandfather lived in Austria. A shadchan made the shidduch. Technically, of course, they lived in the same country: the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

My maternal grandparents also came from different towns, although in the same country. But they were more than 75 miles apart, if I'm not mistaken.

my grandmother is from a town on the russian polish border. she left (for England) when very young though, so I'm not sure of the name. My grandfather came from Frankfurt-am-main, and left germany before the war bh.

No one country predominates though.

7 of mine were from the USA. (Virtually all of my ancestors were in America well before 1800.) The 8th was from Germany and moved to the U.S. in the 1920's.

DH's were from Poland, Russia, Ukraine, and Hungary.

yeah...mothers side
maternal grandmother was native north american (Native American) Algonquin and Iroqouis -born in Otawa
paternal grandfather born in USA but his father was from Dublin Ireland

Fathers side:
my great grandparents were from russia and poland

I've got family from Bobruisk too! My maternal maternal great grandparents! Bobruisk is in Belarus, it's around 90 minutes away from Minsk I think.

my grandmother was from a town in Hungary called Hodu Besermein-don't have the correct spelling
grandfather-munkatch -not sure if he learned or lived there, he lived in czechoslavakia

grandfather-Hungary

why go back to great grandparents if our grandparents came from europe?
