Sefaradi or ashkenazi Shabbat? Sefaradim only give money. Ashkenazim give presents. Young people (ashkenazi) give presents. Middle aged couples who don't have many chasuneh's give money. Middle aged frum couples who are cheap and have lots of chasuneh's give presents.

mixed. my sister's MIL is sefardi and FIL is ashkenazi, so it was a complete mix. the anglo bunch were all ashkenazi and I am telling you that they gave money. I do not remember seeing any gifts at the wedding at all, maybe from her student friends or his hesder friends.

I got money from Ashkenazim, presents from Sefardim, money from those going to many chassunehs, presents from those not going often, etc. I saw no pattern.

I got $15,000 and where I come from that's very very little. I had about 500 people at my wedding. When my parents heard how little I got they gave me an additional $10,000 to make up for it. B"H we are still saving our wedding money and my parents money to IY"H be able to buy a house. That's money that we don't touch no matter what. My parents set my house up plus bought me all my furniture before I got married so I had no use to use my wedding money yet.

Are you an only child? How can people afford this, let alone for several children?

I got 1000 dollars from one grandparent, 1000 shekel from another grandparent, and from maybe 10-20 people between 50 and 200 shekel each. The rest were gifts. I had a small wedding, fewer than 200 people...
