My dh & his brother sound the same & now my 2 sons 20(today 9Nissan) & 17yr old sound the same too.The 17 yr was actually very happy when pple started mixing him up w/ dad. Meant he sounded older. Freaks me out a bit that I, the Mommy of these babies have to listen for aminute to know whoit is.But they don't care.

Now I can tell them apart - I know my DH's face so well, that I notice the nuances and little differences between him and his brother, but my family and friend's can't really tell them apart. When we first got engaged though, it was hard for me - at my Lechaim actually, I think I pointed out the wrong one to a lot of my friends.

You should teach them that it's proper etiquette to identify themselves when they're on the phone. It doesn't matter who you are, it's always a common courtesy to say who's calling, and when you answer the phone, say who you are!
Furthermore, there's nothing lacking on your part if you can't tell your twins apart over the phone. My bil and fil sound exactly the same over the phone, same with my brother and father. Just ask who you're speaking to, there's nothing wrong with that.
I hate it when people call me and don't identify themselves, usually I have no idea who's calling and need to ask. It's perfectly normal.
BTW, maybe a mod could fix the title of the thread. I didn't look at this thread till now b/c I didn't care that someone could tell apart their twin's voices.

Don't feel too bad. My Mother-in-Law called me to ask if my Husband (an identical twin) was ok. She said that she had been talking to him on the phone yesterday and got cut off. He had been with me the whole day and had not called her. I hung up and called my Brother-in-law and told him to call his mother back because she was worried. I was right. She had been talking to him. My In-Law can never tell the boys apart on the phone, I'm the only one who can. The boys know it and try to say "hey mom it's so-and-so" whenever they call.
ps, I'm also the only one who can correctly pick out each one in baby pictures. A guess a girl always knows her husband.

How 'bout this- get them cell phones! that way all you have to do is know whose # is whose and if you have caller-Id you'll be fine.
(JUST KIDDING )

First off, I think you are probably more sensitive to it than them. I used to mix up my brother and mom, now I mix him up with my dad (over the phone of course.) I my husband and dad can even sound the same. The phone is funny like that.
Anyway, I have an idea, at least for when they call you that MIGHT work. I think it's rude when people call and assume you know who they are. Teach them that it's hard for people to tell them apart on the phone, and to keep from embarrassing people, they should always let people know who they're talking to, in a polite way. Hopefully it will work when you call also, and they'll just get it. If they're older they've probably figured out they sound the same and think it's cool. I mean they have the same genes, what do you expect, you shouldn't be embarrassed.
