"How's your brother/sister doing?"

or just tell them, what's the big deal?

Why don't you play a game with them and then find out who they r or listen to certain cues. Will that help. Or just tell them Smile

How old are they?
I have twins and other children as well, and many times do not know which child is talking - they all sound similar. I always ask who is speaking.

Are they identical? Are they often mixed up by other people? Is this something they are sensitive to?

If yes, then I would just ask a question where the answer would identify them without them realizing..

what sneakers are you wearing? they both have different sneakers]

she said to me the same once -that I was wearing on the plane Wink

I'm not sure - I don't know your daughters!
But I know my daughters have different styles, and I would be able to tell them apart by asking them how their day was...or something like that..(one would tell me minute for minute what happened, another says they did nothing today etc..)

Whats the big deal? I can't tell apart many sisters. So I always ask.

I also know a set of twins and they tell everyone, by phone we sound the same, so always ask. There own siblings and mother cant tell them apart and when there voice is recorded on a tape, or answering machine they themselves can't tell who spoke.

Do you think they would be hurt if you asked 'who is this?'

Phones are not so clear, and its common not to recognize peoples voices on the phone..

My husband is an identical twin, and he sounds exactly the same as his twin brother. I made the mistake once and it completely freaked me out! I am now really careful to look at the caller ID on my cell before answering! And they sound the same in real life too, not just on the phone!

If they are teenagers can you try to have a discussion with them and say its really funny but you both sound the same. Do you agree?..... Then some how bring up that on the phone when its busy in the house you can't clearly tell them apart or sometimes even your sister, cousin (if that applies).

Still thinking.....

I dont think it's a big deal. I often can't tell the difference between my mother and sister or any random stranger over the phone and ask 'who's this?" it's not something to fret about....

In this case, to them it does feel like a big deal.
If they are identical and often confused, they are probably sensitive about it (as opposed to mixing up your mother with your sister etc)

I have the same problem with two of my children and they aren't twins. THey are eighteen months apart and very similar. I usually ask them a question that will let me know who they are such as, "So tell me who did you play with today, or What were you up to today? A specific question usually gets the ball rolling with the right one.

My 13 yr old called me from school to say that she is not feeling well and is coming home. 1/2 hour later I get a call that she wants to go to her friends house after school. I was a bit confused, if she felt sick enough to come home from school, why go to a friend? Yeah, it was my 14 yr old and I thought it was the 13 yr old again.

preggymama,

Can you tell them apart - by the way they look? or are they so identical that they look exactly alike?

it's so scary... Very Happy
