I am potty training my son and sometimes he has #2 accidents in his underwear. Crying I wash the underwear by hand (IT IS SO GROSS Puke) and then I put it in a bleach load, sometimes I wash the underwear twice in bleach and it still stinks!! How do I get the smell out?! I can't afford to just throw away underwear. Crying

Wow, bleach 2xs and still smelly?
Try soaking it in baking soda or vinegar until the smell comes out.

That doesn't make sense. Are you using detergent?

OP here: I am so embarrassed. I never thought that hot water could be the issue - we always wash in cold to save $$. Also, we use a generic laundry detergent for the same reason. Maybe I will try using hot water next time and a better detergent? embarrassed Any recommendations on a good detergent?

Unforunately, I've had the same issue lately. Tide + hot water = no smell. I also sometimes oxyclean spray it/

For reasons of sanitation, some things should always be washed in hot water, no matter what the fabric care label says: bed and bath linens, hand and dish towels, underwear, diapers, and anything that has come into contact with body fluids. Don't be embarrassed, many fabric care labels say "cool water wash." That's better for the life of the fabric, but doesn't take into account what the fabric is being used for!

I'm always scared to use hot water...doesn't heat set in stains? (or is that only ironing or the heat of the dryer?)

Yes, in general it's best to use cold water.
Hot water can set in stains.
But sometimes hot water is necessary.

I noticed that money is an issue - but for those of you who it is not - there is laundry detergent Gain with Febreeze in it. I don't know how expensive it is or how well it works. I just once got a free sample - so thought it might be worth mentioning to you.

I have a bucket for poopy underwear (we have two toilet training toddlers). I presoak the underwear in hot water and color-safe bleach. leave it overnight. then I add it to a regular color load which I wash in cold water. btw, I presoak after I rinse the underwear out. you can also use oxyclean or regular detergent instead of the bleach if that's what you have. oh, and I just about always add color safe bleach to my kids' laundry.

I never had this issue. And I use dye free unscented detergent, because of allergies to the detergents. I have never had to wash dirty underwear with bleach or do them twice.

Cheap detergent is cheap for a reason, it usually does not work as well. All is a lot Cheaper then tide and cleans just as well. Purex is also really good and pretty cheap too.
