I want to get a gift for sil in the area of $200-250. I was thinking high chair or something like that.
should I ask first?
I know shes the sort to be totally awkward and like oh no u dont need to get me anything, or thats far to expensive...
but if I dont ask I risk buying something she doesnt really care for.
also do u have any other ideas for someone whos more practical and couldnt care less bout nice furniture or cute outfit?

I love to get gift cards as presents. This way you never have to worry about giving someone something they don't like or don't need, and they can buy something they think is practical.
Since she is SIL, you probably know which stores she likes to shop at so you would know where to get a card.

I second the gift card idea. My sibling just had a baby, and I sent them a check. I figured that would be most appreciated. I figure, if I'm going to spend a lot of money, I'd rather them get something they'll enjoy and will benefit them the most.

If its your brothers wife, ask your brother what they could use. If its your dh's sister, he should ask. That way it will be less uncomfortable for her to respond with an item.

I would give a gift certificate to Babies R Us. They could always buy diapers and formula with it.

buy her what you like, and make sure to give her a gift receipt. if she really doesn't care about nice things, there's a chance that she really doesn't mind them, either. she'll probably keep it. if she returns it, at least you know she'll have something she feels she needs.
