I'm a BT and have SO MANY "halakhic" related questions...OY! This is probably a question for a rav, but as busy as they are, I don't want to be a nuisance if I can learn the answer here!
There's a related thread to this, but I didn't wish to "hijack" the answers that mother was getting by posing my question on her thread.
Is it kosher to put Fray-check on our 6-year-old's tzitzis? Why or why not? (I'm not Lubavitch, but I'm especially interested in knowing if the Rebbe had anything to say about such things.)

It's something you buy in a craft store/craft department that crafty people use to keep fabrics and ribbons from fraying. It's clear and gel-like. It dries clear and slightly stiff. It's withstands laundering without breaking down. I made some hair bows for my dd's and used this on the ends of the ribbons, and I got to thinking that perhaps it would be good for remedying my son's ravelling tzitzis...

Good question! I have it in the house... pretty ok on ribbons, but I haven't thought of it for tzitizis! My guess it's it's okay. The ends/tips don't matter only the knots and some length after it. I guess you can tell the rav " I have a special fabric glue that is made for string and ribbon, can I use it on the ends of tzitzis to keep it from splitting and unraveling"?

I know what you mean - it sounds to me like an excellent Q for a rav. Please tell us what he says.
(What I've been told to do is to make tiny knots at the end of each strand, but your idea sounds better.)

I used to use it whenever I bought new tzitzis, but I have gotten lazy. I never thought it could be a problem, but cant hurt to ask. Let us know.

Would clear nail polish do a similar thing? Like it stops ladders in stockings? Just curious...

The question is not about what will stop fraying, but whether or not tzitzis will remain kosher if something such as Fray-check (or, anything for that matter) is applied.

Yep, good ol' Sally Hansen has been my hosiery heroine for decades for those sneaky, ol' creeping ladders!
...but when I launched the question, it wasn't so much asking "what could be used" but rather "will it still be kosher IF something is used" because I already have the Fray-check from making hair bows for my dds' hair for yontif, and got to thinking the other day if it would be halakhically "ok" to use on ds's tzitzis.
I'm sure you're right about the polish, as far as it stopping frays, but like any product application (not tying), would it retain it's kosher status?

Sorry, got caught up in my own wondering. I'll ask my husband when he gets home this evening (he's a rabbi) as I'm also curious for keeping my son's tzitzit in good shape when he gets them (this Friday *sniff sniff*, I don't want to cut his hair ). I'm pretty sure the answer will be that it's fine, just a hunch...

Awww, I know how you feel...our ds is 6 now, and I remember crying at the thought of him losing his blonde ringlet curls as the day of his upsherin approached...sniff-sniff.
I haven't been able to pull a rav to the side long enough to ask, but I'm actually going to ring him Tuesday in the office. I'm quite interested in knowing what your dh has to say, as well!

Sorry for the delay, I kept forgetting to ask him. He said it's fine to use.
