My daughter is 10 and her hair is very thick and frizzy. I need some ideas to calm her hair down.
any type of shampoo or conditioner. Also, what type of haircut is best for this type of hair?

My dd who is about the same age also has thick, frizzy hair. I find that keeping her hair in a pony works best in minimizing frizziness. I noticed that after showering her hair is more frizzy than when she's taking a bath. After bathing, making her a pony will also help to keep her hair straight. Wearing a hat untill her hair is dry will help even more.
I am also looking for advice about shampoo, I'm currently using Finesse moisturizing shampoo but not very happy with it.

I had very thick frizzy hair and I often used frizz-ease (which is quite pricey) and works ok. I even got a relaxing in 6th grade but it didn't help much because it turns out you actually have to blow your hair to really see a significant improvment Rolling Eyes . Which 6th grader does that?!?! All I got was a few nice pictures and then smelly hair every time I took a shower (from the chemicals).

try mousse. some good ones are finesse or aussie. there's also something made by fructis called 'smoothing milk' that might work well.

dd about the same age has thick curly/ somewhat frizzy hair. I use pantene shampoo and conditioner and have the conditioner sit in her hair for a few minutes. I use No More Tangles after the bath and brush her hair out well and put it in a tight pony. When I style her hair in the morning, once its styled in a tucked under pony, I smooth all the little frizzies down with gel. Frizz-ease is good but very pricey, I don't find it necessary for a child this age.

I also don't brush the entire hair back, but make a side part in the front and the rest of the hair goes straight back.

as a former frizzer and a mother to a frizzy kid, my best advice is pantene shampoo and conditioner, and when the hair is kind of dry,, smooth in some pantene conditioner as a leave-in. or you can buy another leave-in conditioner.

Pantene smooth and sleek. Its the one with the green on it. It was the only shampoo that made it possible to get a brush through my hair!

my hair was thick/frizzy/curly & I either put it in a tight ponytail immediately after my shower or I used a whole cocktail of hair products (serums/gels/I forgot what they were by now) & blew dry my hair curly with a diffuser. making my hair straight took at least an hour with a blow dryer & too many products to mention.

#1 - do not shampoo her hair more than 2X a week unless absolutely filthy. washing it dries it out and creates more frizz. regular shower water will get most of the dirt off without shampoo.
when you do shampoo, follow with conditioner and comb (not brush) it out in the shower with the conditioner still in it. this will keep it soft. then after you wash the conditioner out you can brush it out one more time, but that's it. until you wash her hair again, a brush should not touch her hair.

#2 get someone from israel to send you from a super-pharm for 20 shekel they have a 500 mL bottle of leave in conditioner. brand is Life and they have different ones and one of them is for curly hair. it's a white bottle, blue pump cap says (in hebrew)
"lechut le's'ar
lelo shtifa
le's'ar metultal"
and its got a picture of wheat on it
(if her hair really has no natural curl then get the one for regular hair - I think it's a picture of a peach or something)
after the shower you pump a little of that into your hands, and rub it into her hair, making sure you get it all run through well.
takes 5 minutes. her hair will stay soft and natural looking.

I've suffered many years with the afro look b/c noone knew how to care for my curls (my mom is pin straight and I'm the only curls in my family) but once you know how to take care of them they're the best thing!
feel free to PM me for more advice.

but, whatever you do - do NOT pull it back in a tight pony and let it dry that way. it kills the hair!!!! thick hair is a blessing, you just have to learn how to handle it!

when your daughter gets older, or anyone else that mentioned problems - go for a ouidad cut in a ouidad certified salon. it's expensive (average $120) and it needs to be done every 3 months but it is VERY worth it. her products are great too, but again, not very cheap. so for the young kids I just use this leave in conditioner and I LOVE it!

1. I would let her hair grow for starters since cutting only makes it more unruly imho put it in a headband. But I would take the suggestions above also. 2. Find a conditioner which is more important then a shampoo that says sleek like a pantene for example, 3. nothing worse with hair that has no sheen and frizzy hair needs a shine so you can actually buy a spray on leave in conditioner that has a shine to it too.

I would not patchke with mousse at this stage since when it can become quite messy and a handful to wash out. It could possibly make her hair knotty too.

My hair is frizzy and wavy, but friends with truly curly hair have told me this works for them as well - using "Hair Milk". It's fairly similar to what blahblah was describing - a cream that calm hair, lets it take its curl without making it crunchy or unnatural. In the US, it's sold by Garnier Fructis, but the one I'm using and really like these days is the Pantene Humidity Protection Leave in Cream. There are also similar products made by Sunsilk and I'm sure many many others.

Ponytails tend to be bad for people with frizzy hair because then your curls are flat and your flyaways have a halo effect on your head. Let her keep her hair down and see if it curls, rather than being just poofy and frizzy.

My hair is fine, but has frizz to it, and I could never wear it nicely without blowdrying until I learned how to work with it at getting curly. Experiment with some of these tips and you should be well on your way. Also, try this website for how to take care of kids' hair when it's curly. http://www.naturallycurly.com/.....ykids

comb the knots out in the shower while you have conditioner in it (herbal essence has a new "tousle me softly" line) ... do NOT towel dry ... while still wet put gels or sprays or frizz ease - I have something called noodle head (beyond the zone) which I love - and do NOT brush it - it will vamp up the frizz even more ... use spray or water on your hands to smooth out and reactivate the hair products already in her hair ... or touch up with garnier fructis gel spray ...

in other words don't try to make it look straight (except if you're blow drying it for an occasion) - bring out the beauty of the natural curls by simply taming the frizz ...

Don't brush when dry. I found brushing my hair in the shower with some conditioner was sufficeint. And when wet I would run my hands through it . But once dry leave it alone. Otherwise you will seperate the hair more.
