I was in one of those funky beauty shop recently, and tried on such a cute short, very chic shaitel, in a #4-not one with green and blue highlights.............-hardly needed any styling, perfect for my face, fit like a glove at the nape of my neck, etc.
only $26.00 I want to buy it, but feel so guilty, like how can I, yes I know that these shaitels don't last very long, so I will buy two, maybe 3, etc. easy to wash, brush, and especially good for work....
but I feel that I am betraying my semi custom, full custom, only the best quality philosophy....which of coarse is a stupid erroneous belief............if you like it, and the price is right, easy to care for, can afford it, and looks good, who cares, synthetic or russian virgin hair....are we always trying tro seek approval from others or from even ourselves, "that little voice" within? when does it finally shut down.
I say buy the easy to care for wig (my custom is so time consuming, like a part time job), and the mental energy of vacilating should I or shouldn't I, should rather been spent on doing good deeds for others etc.
any comments?

My mom once got a short cute synthetic wig- she wore it for more than a year, maybe even two, and no one was the wiser.

I got myself a human hair wig for $60. The color and highlights are nicer than my $1800 wig, and it looks perfect. I get many compliments on it.

My mother once got a fantastic cheap synthetic sheitel. No one needs to know that you didnt spend 2k on a super custom creation.

The best thing about is that no one has to know! Unlike a car, you don't advertise the brand name.

Jasmine, dollink, if it looks good and you like it, who cares where you bought it or what it's made of? No one sees the label but you.
People see what they expect to see. If they think you wear 100% undyed virgin European hair fully custom sheitlach, that's what they'll see. Who would have imagined Jackie Kennedy and Barbara Bush wore fake pearls? No one guessed till they auctioned off Jackie's possessions, when they had to announce they were fake, and then Barbara B. revealed that hers were equally faux.
I recall once being at an affair at which the hostess wore a long strand of large and very white pearls, almost silvery. A lady at my table remarked to me how beautiful the pearls were, and added "and you can tell they're real." I smiled. The hostess was a close friend, and when I had complimented her earlier on her necklace, she'd whispered to me "Don't you love 'em? 100% Oscar de la Fake!"

I'd love to try one out. Can anyone suggest a brand and style name appropriate for a woman in her twenties?

I bought a Raquel Welch brand short synthetic (from wigs.com) and I love it. It has the cutest cut and is very becoming. Only my sheitel macher (who recommended the brand to me) knows its synthetic. No one else can tell. I get tons and tons of compliments on it, on the cut, on how it layers over the ears, on how the hair flips in the back.
If someone asks where I bought it, I say I bought it online and not from a sheitel macher.
I have had if for a year and wear it on and off, not every day. It was very nice in the summer to have a short wig with no hair on my neck.

I'm really tempted to get synthetic myself... The only two concerns/questions I have are how synth sheitel fare in rain (I mean, when it just starts to drizzle a bit, very important living here in England), and if it gets "static" (don't fancy hair standing up).

I wear a synthetic here in England - the rain doesn't bother it at all - in fact it is fantastic for the wig - I just brush it out after a rain storm, and it is better than ever - even freshened up! Mine doesn't get static at all. They are very easy to look after, wash and style yourself, and are lightweight and comfortable!

Mrs. Bissli, I have not experienced static problems at all with mine, but maybe that's less of an issue with shorter hair, anyway. Also, mine has always dried and sprung back into style nicely after getting wet. I even wash it myself, it just dries in the air (can't use heat on a synthetic) and I finger fluff it up before wearing. Not sure if all synthetics are this way, or its just a benefit of the cut I chose.
http://www.wigs.com/product_in.....=3638 (here's mine.. there are just tons and tons of cute cuts to choose from. Its a pretty cheap sheitel experiment IMHO).

I have a few long gorgeous synthetics. People definitely don't see they're wigs unless they're into the business, and then who cares.

you can find these synthetics at any of the non-Jewish stores in the crown heights neighborhood on uttica, nostrand, or just about any where. Most of them are quite horrible.............and cater to dark colors...they do carry #2, or #4, the rest are streaked, awful.............but like I said earlier, when I started this thread, every now and then you find a real cute one...go for the shorter styles.....no skin parts or multi directional here, but so what..........for light browns, blondes, red tones, better off looking to yaffa, georgie, judy, jacqueline etec. their synthetic line---but for me, I am 4, and this little short wig is a real steal for $26.00, and the best part, my husband is thrilled, after I had a number of lemons over the years $1200 and up....he got so angry, he was ready to read the riot act........and I was ready to join Reb Arele aka toldos aaron chasidim (mea shearim) who wear long black scarves, actually quite chic, especially with their diamond or pearl stud earrings. good luck,
these wigs BTW are especiallly good with the rain and snow season coming, with a wool beret on top, makes a good combo............thanks for all your great feedback...I am off to buy another one......
