Until when can I wear a straw colored ladies hat?

So I just got married recently, and am please G-d flying to London to live there.
I have two kind of fancy hats, one black and one straw colored. The straw colored one is elegant but summery because it's, well, straw colored.
These hats are not easy to pack.

Should I take the straw one with me? Or wait until I come visit my parents in the state this winter and then bring it for spring?

Any thoughts?

Oh, and it is not actually made out of straw, I think.

In the US the rule of thumb is usually Memorial Day until Labor Day, but since these are US holidays, the rule in England may be different.

I think the difference between summer vs winter hats are material, not colour. I'd decide on which one to bring depending on your wardrobe. What is the black hat made out of--straw or wool?

Here the summer hat season is a bit shorter, I'd say from May Bank holiday (end of May) till Summer bank holiday (last weekend in Aug). I think most women in our synagogue will be wearing winter (ie wool) hats for High Holidays. If your black hat is winter material, I'd bring that one. Otherwise you can leave both for later, unless you're arriving this/next week.

Hey Peanut2, you can always look for gorgeous hats at reasonable prices at M&S or Debenhams. Ladies here (incl non-jews) tend to wear summer hats more often, mainly for weddings and horse races. I esp like organza (very light, transparent fabrics) hats they sell here.

Ruchel, not quite the same if you're thinking of a straw hat as in what Scarecrow wore in the Wizzard of Oz (the closest reference I can think right now).

It may not be actual straw, but some other plant fiber material.

I personally think you can wear summer hats for longer than that, basically whenever the sun is out so could be April or earlier. But by the main chagim I would go for a felt/winter type hat. It depends on your shul as well. Where in London are you moving to?

I live in the NY metro area and in all the shuls I have been to the general rule is felt starting Rosh Hashana until Pesach.

Forget the "rules" and use your head. The thermometer, not the calendar, should be your guide. If it's warm enough for summer clothes, it's warm enough for a straw hat. If it's cool enough for corduroy, it's cool enough for felt. End of story.

I once had this question the other way around, If I can wear velvet hat in Sept. I was told velvet can be worn the months that have a r in it. That leaves May-August as summery. I guess you can use it as a guide the other way around. I honestly feel wear what you have and don't make such an issue about these little details
