My MIL wears a bra with poor support. She is not small on top and could use a good one like from saposh etc. She once mentioned to me in conversation that she buys her bras at discount stores such as marshall's. Is there any way I can in a very nice way let her know she would look better with a bra iwht good support? I thought of getting together with SIL's and buying a gift certificate to saposh as a gift, but A-would it sound rude? B-she might use it on a robe.
Any suggestions on how to tell this to her?

I think you should just stay out of it let her daughter handle it the way they want to if they care.

if she doesn't get backaches from bad support, it's not for her benefit, it's for yours. you don't like the way she looks, so you want to get her something nicer. you and sil can absolutely buy her a gift card to saposh, but you can't expect her not to buy a robe. some people just don't believe in spending $60 on a bra. sometimes it's hard to fit yourself, but you get the hang of it eventually. maybe it's against her nature to spend that kind of money on an undergarment. leave her alone or get her a gift card and smile when she buys herself a nice robe.

I often find high-end undergarments, such as Le Mystere, Natori and Wacoal, at Marshalls and Daffys. Don't knock it until you've tried it.
Chances are her bras are worn out or don't fit well.
Does she live nearby? You could ask her to come to the foundations store with you so she can watch the kids while you try on, then you can all go out to lunch. Let her see how different your clothes look with different foundation garments. Maybe she'll get the idea. Or maybe a pushy sales person will do the job for you.

I say mind your own business. I don't think it bothers her, I think it bothers you. If she brings it up or asks your advice thats another story but am I being old fashioned by saying I think its chutzpadik to think this is your place to interfere? A bra is a piece of underwear and she is your MIL.
But since you seemed genuinely bothered here's my advice. I think you should buy her the gift certificate and if she thinks or wants a brand name well fitted bra, she will get one. If she buys a robe then she must be happy with her bras

I semi-agree that you should just keep it to yourself
but if you want the way I would "hint" it is by saying (and this is all based on if you do/dont watch tv or do/dont read magazines - if you dont but have a freind who does you can say your friend told you - I could be the friend)
the easiest way to may you look 10 lbs lighter is sometimes by just wearing a well fitted bra, one that gives support AND IS THE RIGHT SIZE (most women are wearing the wrong size, usually when fitted correctly they go down a size in the bust and up in the cup size) I've heard this on oprah and read it in countless magazines.
you should know......my grandmother is very large, has told me straight out that she wears the bra's that she wears eventhough she knows that she sags and it doesnt look "put together" becuase she doesnt want to actaully look the size she is. By letting them sag "they look smaller"

Older women often wear bad cheap bras, or no bras. It's a generation thing.

I have a sister in law with that problem. She's around my age, so I once brought it up in a conversation that we were having about clothing fitting properly, that if she wore a better bra, her figure would look really good, but it went over her head, so I let it go. Some people don't care. I don't want to hurt her feelings, so I wouldn't say it again.
You could always try to bring it up in a conversation. Chances are, she won't be changing, for you.

You're destroying my image of chic older French women, Ruchel!
I don't see that myself. Older women just sag more, so they (oh, what the heck, *we*) need better bras.
BTW, this thread made me decide that I could use a couple of new bras, so I want to Daffys (not quite Marshalls, but same idea) at lunch, and scored two Wacoals for less than the retail price of one.

Being cheap in other areas is ok but not a bra imho it's absolutley nessecary to have a very good one. She could get good ones online ranging from $60.00 too. But you need to find her a close friend who will say this tactfully or as a present get her a gift certificate to a store that you know sells them

I sometimes wonder if women with poor fitted bra's are aware of hoe they look and if they understand the importance of a well fitted bra. I have a friend who realy dresses well with expensive clothing but could realy use a good bra I always had the urge to shlep her down to underworld plaza. We once even spoke about the topic and she said "no one can see your bra I don't understand why spend so much on them" I was to in shock to talk so we left it at that.
I would just bring up the topic and talk about that YOU need a GOOD bra with a GOOD FIT so maybe shall think, oh so do I.
Good luck
