My DD is 6 and she has always had the problem of standing up for herself and not letting her stuff (toys, bike...) get ruined by others. I am at my wits end I don't know what to anymore, she lets kids 1/2 her age boss her around ( you can't come to my house, don't touch my bike..), and does not even react.

I just worry because she told me last week that no one plays with her in camp, so I called the head and found out that it is a clicky bunk but they will try hard to make them all play together. Now she tells me isn't it nice "daniella" spoke to me finally... Confused This happens in school as well.

Otherwise she is a bright and good kid and everyone tells me how well behaved she is. She is my oldest but I still feel that all the other kids seem to know how to respond to these things, even my son who's 3 will say "your not my friend"- which is age appropriate for him. I have tried to teach her that she does not have to play with someone who is not treating her fairly. I just want to know she can handle herself when I am not there. What should I do?

NO, she needs a social skills class. Play therapy is for kids who have issues and if they don't talk, you can't help them. With play therapy, they will express their thoughts, feelings, emotions, fears, and the therapist talks back in a soothing way so it penetrates.

shaklee, play therapy can be a way for a therapist to engage any child for whom traditional talk therapy would not be effective- due to age, cognition, emotional capabilities, or any other reason. a child can definitely be "taught" certain concepts through play, and these skills can be practiced through play as well.

if you are concerned about your child's social skills, I would suggest having her evaluated by a professional (I.e. child psychologist), who will guide you in terms of appropriate treatment.

hmmm. let's see, if you live in the computer chair, then you may need to dance around it a bit... till you find something. Best bet is to start with the school principal. They really are a wealth of information.

Actually, the computer chair is in NY, if that is helpful. I like the idea of the principal but I really don't feel so comfortable going there yet.
