My dd is 9 years old and every once in a while she bites her nails.
What can I do to make her stop?
She even peels-off her toe-nails(ewwwwwwwwww)

Put clear nail polish on her nails and she might be less tempted.
I still bite my nails! I have to keep them polished or I bite them.

I told my daughter that pinworm eggs hide under the fingernails and if she keeps on biting her nails/sucking her thumb she'll get pinworms. Then I told her every little gory detail about how they get in the you know what etc. , etc.. You should have seen the look of horror on her face! I only had to say pinworms! to remind her every so often and before I knew it the habit was broken.

My mom told me the same thing when I was a little girl. It scared the daylights out of me. I had nightmares for weeks afterwards about such stuff crawling out of my body, and was terrified to sit on the toilet for fear of what might happen. Of course all this only made me bite my nails more, out of nervousness. I outgrew it by myself when I was older and when I realized what it looked like to walk around with my hands in my mouth, or have ugly nails all the time.
OP, you can try putting clear polish on her nails to make it 'pretty' and that should make it pretty bad and harder to bite.

there are products you can get, special bitter tasting nail polish. I usually find it in beauty supply stores. the only problem is that if seh rubs her eyes it will burn and irritate her like crazy. also any food she touches will also get the taste

I found a vile tasting product in the pharmacy (made of banana oil essence and sharp tastes mixed together - uggh!) that is a clear liquid that you smear on the fingertips (in my case, it was ds - he wouldn't want - nail polish!)

I bit my nails until I was 22, and then started getting weekly manicures (I wasn't married yet). I was cured within about a month. I just got cheap french manicures (ie. $10/visit). Totally worth the money IMHO. I can see how that might not work so great for a younger girl, though.
